Help with altitude with Icon

Featured Replies

Im somewhat a newbee when it comes to flight sim games. My problem has been with gaining altitute without stalling. I know how to control it most the time its just with a certain challege more than anything. The one where u are in a canyon going through rings. the last 2 or 3 rings I keep stalling. Cant figure out how to control my altitude in that tight spot I guess. Should I bring the nose strait down then when it gets speed try to slowely gain altitute back using trim? It doesnt seem like the best method for a challege like this. Feels like Im missing a technique here.

Some aircraft are better suited than others for challenges... part of the challenge to determine what best to use.I remember doing this one with the Stearman... when trying to climb out of the canyon/valley at first I was not concerned about airspeed and kept it high (100mph?) until some point where I saw airspeed bleeding off and I wasn't going to make it out of there. One needs to use (in this situation) Vx or Best Angle of Climb speed. It's used to get you as high up as possible over the least distance forward traveled. V speeds are found in the Pilot Operating Handbook (POH). I don't know what Vx is for either the Stearman or Icon (didn't have a POH for the Icon and the one I had for the Stearman did not list it). So I had to experiment. I found 80mph was "enough" to enable me to clear the top of the ridge and into the next ring.If you are above Vx or below... you are "wasting" performance. You can't gradually fly slower hoping the climb over the obstacle will improve. You have to stick Vx and hold it (pitch the nose to the proper angle, airspeed bleeds down to what you want and hold it... / trim ).So with the Stearman, cleared the last ring before the climbout, pitched to Vx attitude which caused the airspeed to bleed down to about 80mph and trimmed for 80. No messing with it after that until clearing the ridge...Edit: Btw appreciated you starting the thread title with "Help with"... easy to spot and not so easy to get buried in all the, ehem, other posts about FLIGHT.-Rob

You should bear in mind that the default aircraft will not necessarily be the best aircraft to do all the challenges in, i.e. the (payware) faster, higher performance aircraft and the tough challenges are the carrot on the stick to get you opening your wallet. However, this does not mean you cannot do the challenges in the default craft, and in the case of the one where you are stalling at the last thee hoops, what you will need to do near the end of the course, is instead of simply heading straight for the next hoop, make a 180 degree turn away from the cliff face, climb a bit, possibly circling to get plenty of altitude to spare, and then with some altitude to spare, continue the course. Keep in mind you can dive through and then zoom-climb at the third to last one.Al

yeah I heard a few beta testers did it this way, but wasn't my first choice as it stretches out the time.Mustang is a hoot to fly that course and at night with it fun too.

That's what I did while flying the beta. Kind of a wingover with a 180 back to the other end then turn back and climb. I haven't tried it in the final version, but in the beta, the shifting winds could be absolutely brutal coming out of that canyon. Really made you stay on your toes.Matt

You know... I remember reading that too, but for the life of me I don't remember experiencing that. Maybe because I was below the ridge for most of the flight?

I guess it's more noticeable if you watch the wind gauge changing.Matt

Aha...My eyeballs were caged to the pitch of the plane and the ridgeline (occasional peek at the airspeed :P ).Thanks Matt.

Thanks for the input everyone. For some reason I was thinking that mission required the Icon. That canyon is a little tricking still but thats alright.
