Tips on Smooth Landings please.

I think the most important thing is to take the time for a good approach.
This is very important...As is Airspeed Control... I cannot overemphasize the importance of maintaining the proper airspeed for a good landing.Good practice would be doing Tutorial 2 - Landing over and over and over. As has been said, use pitch to control airspeed and throttle to maintain rate of descent... make small changes... not enough a tad more... at some point with enough practice you can have airspeed and power settings correct that require little or no input until the landing flare (if the wind is not kicking you around). With the Icon I like to keep a smidge of power in during the flare, then pull that out (reducing to idle) when I am at the proper landing attitude (slightly nose high) a few feet off the ground, and let it settle in.One thing many people fail to realize is how important the 4 Fundamentals are when it comes to landings. Just like certain fundamentals for certain sports... same here:
  1. Climbs
  2. Descents
  3. Straight & Level
  4. Turns

And the combinations of the above. Nice thing about the Landing Mission you are focusing on just having to perform a Straight & Level Descent. You are set up a nice distance from the airport and slightly high which is where you want to be starting an approach. The PAPI is a nice aid but not even close to being required. You can pick a point where you want to land and keep that at a certain place on the windscreen. The point moves down... you are going to overshoot, your point moves up, you will undershoot. As a side note: she kind of messes up the "slow down/go down" thingy... it's "slow down before you go down" i.e. when you pull power back, remain in level flight until airspeed bleeds down near the approach speed you want, then lower the nose.Nail the airspeed with pitch and use power to control where you intend to land... a power change will probably require a pitch change btw to maintain your approach speed.Start the landing flare about 20' above the ground... this will vary from plane to plane... you are transitioning from nose low to the landing (slightly nose high) attitude. It takes practice here... you start the flare too high and you end up stalling higher than you should and smacking the runway. Start the flare too late and you end up smacking / bouncing in a nose low attitude. It's a judgement thing acquired over time. Don't be hard on yourself as this is not easy for the first number of hours. This has been mentioned... in actual flying of small GA (single engine) aircraft, you want that stall warning coming on just as you are about to make contact with the runway and the stick / yoke should be in your lap (you run out of aft stick just as contact is made).hope all that helps,Rob

Ozzie nailed it - tutorial number 2 is a good basic start. And there has been a lot of great advice shared so far - none that I can add to, just wanted to welcome you to computerized aviation!Ozzie - nice shot of Eddie!
