March 14, 201214 yr Author Thanks Zach. I take it there is nothing in the AVSim library then? I haven't found a C-5 or even a C-17 either... Seems I can't find any of the bigger war planes for FSX in the library. Randy
March 14, 201214 yr If you really want a B-17 or a B-24, I would seriously suggest considering paying for the A2A AccuSim B-17G, and at a push the older AlphaSim B-24, which is pretty good for an older FS aeroplane. Not free of course, but they are both worth the money, especially the A2A Fortress, which is a good contender for being the best FSX aeroplane you can get (yes, A2A's B-17 really is that good).Al Alan Bradbury Check out my youtube flight sim videos: Here
March 14, 201214 yr The best place I have found for freeware military aircraft is at Simviation. They have a B17 there - http://www.simviation.com/fsxmilitary4.htm.Best regards,Jim I haven't found a C-5 or even a C-17 either... Seems I can't find any of the bigger war planes for FSX in the library.I don't know how you are doing your searches but got several hits for a c17 in the AVSIM Library. Just type c17 (make sure it's a one and not an L) in the first search box that searches all areas. Don't go and select FSX only.Best regards,Jim

Thanks all, and for the tip on the A2A B17, I'll take a gander at it. :)Maybe that's what I was doing, searching specifically FSX... Thanks Fire. Also, Chock, thanks for the heads up on the A2A... that is a bad &@($* looking plane... think I'll go buy it. :( Randy
March 14, 201214 yr I can pretty much guarantee you will not be disappointed with the A2A Fortress. Customer service from A2A is of an equally high standard to the quality of their products too, which is another reason to recommend them.Al Alan Bradbury Check out my youtube flight sim videos: Here
March 17, 201214 yr Author Hello All!I just wanted to say, THANK YOU for the suggestion of the B-17. I LOVE it. Here we are today on a training flight outside of Seattle, odd location, yes... ITS SECRET! :PI'll be getting a few others I have my eye on as well.. .the C-130 and a B-24 Liberator I saw from another company (?) I think it was... Anyway, thanks a lot guys, any other great WWII Warbird planes I should be looking at?Randy Randy
March 17, 201214 yr Well, if you like old bangers such as the Fortress, then pretty much any of the A2A Accu-Sim ones will float your boat, and if it's warbirds you like, then the Spitfire from them is really excellent, but really, any recent A2A model is worth a look.Slightly cheaper, since as good as the Accu-Sim stuff is, it could not be called cheap, and in an effort to avoid bankrupting you, the UIVER Douglas DC-2 is a good choice (you can find that over at Flight1.com), it's very inexpensive and an interesting alternative to the more successful DC-3 (of which there are a few for FSX), the DC-2 is a bit slower than a Dakota, and requires some care to not overheat the engines, since the cowlings are not the opening ones the later DC-3 sported, so it's a good flying challenge where managing the cylinder head temperatures is concerned if you don't want a catastrophic engine fire. Technically, the DC-2 is not really much of a warbird, but there were some flying during WW2, so what the hell eh?Kind of of the same ilk, but a bit more recent, Aerosoft's Consolidated PBY Catalina is another fantastic old war bird for FSX that comes close to rivalling A2A's B-17 in many respects. That too requires careful engine management, since it does simulate things such as shock cooling if you descend too fast without easing those cylinder head temperatures down, you can get fouled plugs, engine fires and such. It is a slow aircraft, but the fact that it can alight or take off from water and dry land, means it is a very flexible FSX aeroplane, and it has a very long endurance too - you can easily stay aloft for nine hours on full tanks if you have the stamina! There are many Catalina variants in the package (taildraggers and tricycle gear variants), some with modern avionics and some with the more original fit, so it suits all kinds of preferences. Definitely worth a look and certainly among the best FSX aeroplanes you can buy.Al Alan Bradbury Check out my youtube flight sim videos: Here
March 17, 201214 yr Author Thanks Al, I appreciate that information. :) I'll look into them. :) Randy
March 17, 201214 yr I would also second the Aerosoft Consolidated PBY Catalina. Although getting on a bit as far as FSX addons go, it was SO good at release, that it's still a very fine addon.
