March 15, 201214 yr How do you calculate this? You enter latitude first, then longitude. (All on one line). The first character is a letter, either "N" for north or "S" for south. Then the two digit degrees, followed immediately by the two digit minutes. Then you enter the seconds in DECIMAL format. To change two-digit seconds to single digit seconds that the FMS expects, divide the two-digit seconds by 60So if the seconds part of your coordinates was "48", you would divide 48/60 which equals 0.8... you would add ".8"Thus, 32 degrees north, 15 minutes and 48 seconds would be: N3215.8The longitude part always begins with either "W" for west, or "E" for east. Longitude degrees can be either 2 or 3 digits. The FMS expects 3 digits, so if degrees are less than 100, put an initial "0". Then enter minutes, followed by decimal seconds. If your longitude was 90 degrees east, 25 minutes, 28 seconds, you would enter this as: E09025.5 28 seconds divided by 60 is 0.466 - you would round that up to ".5"If your degrees were 110 instead of 90, then your entry would be: E11025.5 Jim BarrettLicensed Airframe & Powerplant Mechanic, Avionics, Electrical & Air Data Systems Specialist.
