March 18, 201214 yr I am currently using an I5-661 with integrated graphics, and am looking for a reasonable upgrade. I am fairly new to FSX, so I am not ready to build a new system yet. A new system should happen later in the year, but I would like to bump up this config now for a more enjoyable experience while I figure out what I want later.Current configuration:I5-661 @ 3.3Ghz stock cooler using Intel integrated graphics4GB DDR1333Two 1920x1080 monitorsWin 7 Pro 64bitI am looking to add a video card, overclock the CPU, and add an additional 4G RAM as this seems a reasonable compromise.Possible upgrades:Video: GTX560 ti, but am not sure which version. 1GB or 2GB. Other posts suggest that 2GB is needed for multi-monitors. I have 23" monitors, but would like to go somewhat larger. RAM: Would adding 4GB of DDR3 1333 make a difference?CPU: I understand that CPU speed is paramount, but I have not overclocked before. Would OC'ing this CPU be worthwhile? Any CPU cooler recommendations? Thanks for providing any critiques/comments.Kevin
March 20, 201214 yr That grafic card looks good. As for the RAM size I don´t really know. I´m currently using a 1 GB GTX 560 SC feeding 2 17" displays and it does use the whole GDDR. So 2 GB could come in handy for the future. The additional RAM could help you if you have lots of things running at the same time or FSX using a lot of resources (mostly 1,5 - 2 GB on my system). 8 GB will likely prevent you from running into OOM´s (But I´m also happy with my 4 GB, I never had such an error.) As the RAM is resonably cheap this days, 4 GB more won´t matter that much. For OC´ing I can only speak for the second generations core i´s. With them it´s very easy to oc (at least the k variants) but I´m not experienced with the first generation. But with decent cooling you might get arround 4 GHz out of that. That will likely be all right till your new system will be ready. Best regards, Steffen Fight time: NGX 737-700: 37,0h; -800: 47,2h
March 21, 201214 yr Author Thanks for the input.Yes the RAM is cheap enough to not give it anymore thought.I was ready to pop on a 2G GTX 560 ti when my 11 year old son said he really would like to try a setup with 3 monitors. I have been leaning away from Radeon because of the Nvidia bias and my preference to a single larger monitor. But since he uses it far more than I do, I had better do a little more homework.Kevin
