March 20, 201214 yr Hi everyone,I have my money saved for a GTX660. I am seriously considering it BUT, a last minute idea came into my head.I currently own the Asus P8P67 Deluxe mobo. I am considering moving to one of the Z68/GEN3 motherboards so I will have future PCIe3 support AND Ivy Bridge support later down the road. What do you guys think the better buy is?
March 20, 201214 yr Author Hard to say. Both are good upgrades (for you).Well.... What I am thinking is that if I upgrade my motherboard, I won't have to fully upgrade my computer for 5 years or so. I only will need to swap CPU's and GPU's.If I get a new motherboard Z68/Gen3 which one would you recommend? Also, if I upgrade, will I still be able to OC right back to where I was on the current board I have now?
March 21, 201214 yr I recommend you stick with your motherboard until you are ready to buy an Ivy Bridge CPU. Then go for one of the upcoming Z77 motherboards when you are ready to go for Ivy Bridge. There is really no point in upgrading to a Z68 Gen3 board from a P67 board if you already have a Sandy Bridge CPU since you would not get PCIe 3.0 if using Sandy Bridge CPU.
March 21, 201214 yr Author I recommend you stick with your motherboard until you are ready to buy an Ivy Bridge CPU.I guess so.... I am thinking that I should get the GTX660 THEN get an IB cpu and a new mobo.
March 21, 201214 yr I think you would achieve the same thing with the Z68. P67 and Z68 are virtually the same mobos, only Z68 adding the graphic department. Nothing else really changed (except the obvious PCI3 support). I only ment performance and OC wise.Waiting for Z77, as it's just around the corner would be a better idea.As your GPU is quite low, I would upgrade to PCI3.0 capable card whenever they come out, but couple of with a good mobo, Z77.
March 21, 201214 yr Author If I upgrade to a Z77, I won't be able to afford a new graphics card for about 6 months. My choices are this:Get the GTX660 in a few weeksORGet the Asus P8Z77 Deluxe in a few weeks and upgrade to Ivy Bridge in about 6 months.
March 21, 201214 yr I'd say there's no point of getting a deluxe board or pro board. Just get the Asus P8Z77. As far as I know Pro and Dexule is only for people who run lots of GPUs (quad SLI) or lots of HDD's. Maybe I'm wrong about this and perhaps the Pro/Deluxe boards will give you better overclocking...?I'd say there's no point of getting a deluxe board or pro board. Just get the Asus P8Z77. March 21, 201214 yr If I upgrade to a Z77, I won't be able to afford a new graphics card for about 6 months.Say, what use is a PCIE3.0 card if you have no PCIE3.0? The question is, how much of the boost...But in the end, you can also get the GPU first, as your current sucks, then buy IB + the mobo and then have a great boost through PCIE3.0 etc...If I upgrade to a Z77, I won't be able to afford a new graphics card for about 6 months.Say, what use is a PCIE3.0 card if you have no PCIE3.0? March 21, 201214 yr Author But in the end, you can also get the GPU first, as your current sucks, then buy IB + the mobo and then have a great boost through PCIE3.0 etc...Indeed.... My frames are as slow as some people with 920'[email protected] with a GTX580!I expect to see a large FPS jump with this new card. FSMark11 is a true savior when it comes to buying new hardware.I think that I'll end up with an IB and Z77 mobo late this summer around August.
