importing sectional charts

Featured Replies

Is FS2004 capable of importing a sectional or terminal area chart in JPEG or other digital format, so it appears in the moving map display and/or GPS?

Probably not in the default Flight Simulator map or GPS. These are apparently generated from the data in scenery files. I gather the kneeboard utilizes an HTML system that could probably display a static map in JPG or GIF format.Note that viewing the map that comes with Flight Simulator pauses the simulation and can't realy be considered a "moving" map. The overhead view accessable with the Shift-] key compbination isn't realy a map, it just shows what the simulator's scenery would look like from a vantage point high above your aircraft.Fly! and Fly!II have popup maps that for some areas display a moving aircraft icon representing position and orientation on a scanned real world chart. Outside detal areas Fly! scenery tiles tend to be too obvious though. Scenery outside detail areas looks much better in Fly!II, but the marketing and accounting people forced it into a premature release and the maps don't align properly with the 3D scenery. There are downloadable charts for Fly!II that have corrected the alignment issues and added coverage areas. The effect you seek might be achevable with a third party moving map "gauge". I don't know if there are any available though. There are some kneeboard enhancements around, but I haven't tried any yet. Maybe I should try one.RobertVAFlying multiplayer most weekends on FlightAdventures.com

I just tried a kneeboard enhancement from FlightAdventures. It adds a tool bar to the top of the kneeboard's key commands page. The toobar contains forward and back buttons, a URL entry space and a dropdown list that accesses several aviation related web pages. It actually turns the kneeboard into a mini web browser! The pages listed in the dropdown include status of the FlightAdventures persistant FS2002/FS2004 multiplayer flight, real world US weather, SIDs, STARS, a timer and airfield diagrams. Some of the features access internet sites and would only work while the computer is connected to the internet. Some of the charts are PDF files though, and the PDF reader makes the computer return to windowed mode, therefore not displaying the chart in the kneeboard popup. Real world radar DOES display in the kneeboard popup. The toolbar dropdown includes an item for returning to the key commands page.Obviously, with a little tweeking, the Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 kneeboard has a significant subset of Internet Explorer's capabilities. Being a Microsoft product it probably uses the same dynamic link library (DLL) to interpret HTML that IE uses. It would be supprise me if there aren't some other kneeboard enhancers around too.RobertVAFlying multiplayer most weekends on FlightAdventures.com

Hi, you could download the freeware tool FSFlightMax which is capable to do what you need - display the aircraft

I've written some HTML which allows sectionals in jpg format (matt fox has uploaded all of them to AVSIM, or you could make your own...) to be viewed via the kneeboard - please see FSX-ionals! link in my sig.Best,sg

I go one step even better, using Memory-Map from www.memory-map.com on another PC using gpsout from my Flight Sim PC and displaying my Sim Charts from aeroplanner.com I can have a seemless locked on moving map no matter where I fly to. I have all the US sectionals and I just bought the rest of the world charts. Works GREAT!! And when I want to find cool terrain areas to fly in I use Topo USA from Delorme. When Flight 1 Releases USA Streets I can then use Streets & Trips!By the way, I created a Kneeboard enhancement for animated current USA weather maps if anyone is interested. I was planning on putting it up on my website with a Virtual Co-Pilot freeware product I am developing. I just haven't posted about it until I'm ready to get some beta testers because I know what it's like to have people advertise and show nothing for a year! I will post when I am ready though but it's just something very active in the works.Carmine http://ftp.avsim.com/dcforum/Images/wave.gif
