How do you guys land?

Recommended Posts

As we do low drag approaches nearly all the time, depending on the weather and the airfield I usually disconnect the automatics around 500ft above the airfield. Disconnect the autothrottle first, two clicks is all it takes of the switch (not 30 continuous clicks as some captains seem to think), and then disconnect the autopilot (2 clicks again).Pitch + Power = Performance...Pitch + Power + Trim = Trimmed PerformanceYou know that for 60 tonnes and flaps 30 the N1 for final approach will be around 57%. Flaps 40 is roughly 61%. Adjust for weight and wind, also not every ILS, Non precision approach or runway PAPIs are 3 degrees so check the charts!Set your pitch. Flaps 30 will be around 2.5 degrees nose up giving a V/S on a 3 degree path of ~750fpm. Flaps 40 pitch is around 1 degree. If you have crosswind and/or gusty winds, disconnect earlier to get a good feel for the approach and the conditions rather than disconnecting at the minimum use height of the autopilot which is 158ft below the DA which will help you.Cross the threshold in time with the "50" callout and dont get scared of the runway coming towards you, keep your aiming point and at 30ft start to raise the nose by 2-3 degrees, 20ft slowly close the throttles (the quicker you do it, the quicker the aircraft will pitch down as a result of the reduced thrust and more likely lead to a positive landing) and then as the effect of the thrust reduction takes place hold your attitude and touch down.Practice makes perfect. Keep trying until you get it right. Good luck!Henry Lidster

Just a suggestion, if you're going to tell someone to read something that is abbreviated (FTCM in this case) please try to to at least abbreviate it correctly. The Flight Crew Training Manual should be abbreviated as "FCTM".New users might not know what FTCM or FCOM stands for.
