April 15, 200422 yr Hi Folks,I looked for a forum that catered to newbies with dumb questions, but I couldn't find one. That being the case, how 'bout someone trying these on...1) What's with the "circle to land" nonsense when I try to change the assigned runway. Can it be fixed ?2) Why does the system place my aircraft at one end of the runway and then make me taxi to the other end to take off. I make sure to choose the active but it still happens very often at my home airport. So I downloaded AFCAD ver2 and closed the other end; but it didn't work. FS2004 ATC doesn't seem to get my AFCAD changes, although everything else is fine.3) Does the autogen scenery grow forever ? Each time I do a low and slow VFR around my home area, new roads, rivers, and misc. scenery items have appeared. Why build new sceneries...maybe I should just wait. Someday I'll fly to Morgantown and Mountaineer Stadium will be sitting there. Many hours of FSDS time will go down the tubes.4) And finally, is there any way to move the rivers from the hillsides down to the valleys where God and gravity put them. Thanks for any answers you may have.Good Friends Make Good DaysHave a good dayairdale60:-newbie
April 15, 200422 yr Good morning airdale60;I am afraid I may not have a good answer for some of your questions, but here is a try anyway. You appear to be somewhere in WV and my home airport is KLWB. Just wondered how close you were and wanted to at least say hello, welcome you and ask where you are located?"I looked for a forum that catered to newbies with dumb questions, but I couldn't find one. That being the case, how 'bout someone trying these on...""TRY" it will be! Maybe dumb answers, but certainly not dumb questions."1) What's with the "circle to land" nonsense when I try to change the assigned runway. Can it be fixed ?"This really is not a "nonsense" arrival procedure for ATC from center at uncontrolled airports. For example, flying blind you may descend on an ILS approach until the airport is within sight, but circle to land on the opposite end of the same runway due to wind conditions. HOWEVER: Mr. Gate's ATC has instructed me to circle to land as you refer and then on final cleared me to land straight ahead on the ILS runway to which I am approaching (i.e.KJYO). I concur that this is a bit squirrelly but is the nature of the FS beast as far as I know. "2) Why does the system place my aircraft at one end of the runway and then make me taxi to the other end to take off. I make sure to choose the active but it still happens very often at my home airport. So I downloaded AFCAD ver2 and closed the other end; but it didn't work. FS2004 ATC doesn't seem to get my AFCAD changes, although everything else is fine."Again, the quick answer is prevailaing winds, but I don't know why FS chooses the same end of the runway as active regardless of wind conditions at times. What airport specifically are you talking about?Traffic restrictions dictate departure procedures at some airports. My example of KJYO above may apply as the Rwy 35 approach would be directly from Dulles.Note: For both of your first two questions, if you haven't already you might want to visit VatSim and consider taking a crack at joining that procedure as a Pilot. It will look complex and bring a bit of apprehension to start with, but if you will hang in there and go through the routine everything will fall in place faster than you will initially think. There you will get credible ATC. You will also meet some very helpful and friendly folks as well. Learn to communicate on the private ".MSG" choice and you can have some very enjoyable talks with interesting fellow simmers from all over the world. Do monitor their "Real World Aviation" too, particularlly the Macey two arrival including Radar. "3) Does the autogen scenery grow forever ? Each time I do a low and slow VFR around my home area, new roads, rivers, and misc. scenery items have appeared. Why build new sceneries...maybe I should just wait. Someday I'll fly to Morgantown and Mountaineer Stadium will be sitting there. Many hours of FSDS time will go down the tubes."You are right that it builds scenery as you make progress. Depending on your system and the complexity of the scenery, this can be more or less noticable. With default scenery, I really don't notice it that much. With added mesh it is a factor pretty much proportional to the complexity and realism of what one sees. As I understand it, a warp speed system of the future would be needed to handle total scenery all of the time."4) And finally, is there any way to move the rivers from the hillsides down to the valleys where God and gravity put them."Not that I know of, and I totally share your amusement at this presentation. The added mesh from several sources will add to the realism particularly in the mountains, but the New River still goes uphill at times. This is again the nature of that with which Mr. Gates has given us to work. Perhaps some designer or developer will shed more light on this subject for I am in a bit over my head. I would recommend that you take a peek at added mesh if you have not yet, along with possibly landclass. Raimondo Tabguret has freeware for part of the USA and is working on complete coverage. FSGenesis by Justin Tyme also has freeware for the west coast and Rockies along with payware for the rest of the USA at a nominal cost. I think both are excellent and add to the looks of what you see. I am presently useing fsgenesis, and the looks of the area you describe is greatly improved IMHO (although it will not move Mr. Gate's strange river locations in places).Happy flying:RTH

April 15, 200422 yr Welcome to the forum. For the rivers and roads, there are several scenery design programs that will do that, the learning curve is a little steep, but you'll get great results. Check out Ground2k4 or the Coastline editor and you can delete rivers and roads and add them where you want them.Regards, MichaelKDFWhttp://www.calvirair.com/mcpics/PBTMCa.jpgCalVirAir International VACougar Mountain Helicopters & Aviation[link:www.cgrmtnhelos.com]Cougar Mountain Helicopters Best, Michael KDFW
April 15, 200422 yr A tip for #2: Start at the ramp (either gate or GA parking). I find it easier because a lot of times I'll be close to the correct runway.Like RTH says, it's due to the wind conditions. If you use real-world weather, it'll take that into consideration. As far as #1, I find that ATC will also take the type of aircraft you're flying into consideration (although you'll see this more with the SIDESTEP maneuver).
April 16, 200422 yr Hey Folks,I surely got a far better crop of answers than I really expected. It looks like there really might be a solution to my river problem. On that subject RTH I added Cheat Lake to my FS2004 sceneries a couple of days ago, and; as I tried to chase the Cheat upstream, I got turned around on Middle Mt. and came down the Greenbrier. Got gas at KLWB.I've done that, for real,in a car. If you get your watersheds confused up there you're likely to end up anywhere.Today I tried to put a New River Bridge BLG file that I downloaded in FS2002. It worked fine if 2004, but its about 400 feet low in 2002. I can't tell whether it the DEM base or a scale problem.I'm a sixty year old retired Telecom engineer. My home airport is KCKB, until I get my new one built. I live in a little town between Buckhannon and Philippi, West Virginia, called Volga. I don't actually live in Volga...sort of in the suburbs of Volga. I live on the Buckhannon River which amazingly was included in 2004 scenery while the Upper Tygart, the main watershed was omitted. I've got that river to cross too.My flying experience was as a Radar operator in EC-121's, E-1B's, E-2A's, and a terrifying trap on the Lake Champlain in an AD5-W Guppy.I flew EC-121's out of KEF, and did a Med cruise on the SARA, then went to Yankee Station On the Indy.I almost had a private ticket but it went the day I lost my arm in a 327 Chevy. I started with this thing Christmas, and I'm enjoying the h--- out of it. As far as flying on line goes, Verizon (my former employer) still feeds this "holler" with a tattered piece of 16 pair buried "A" sheath cable. On a real good day, I can muster up about 18kbs, if AOL doesn't get mad at me and pull the string out of the can.Well, thanks again guys, I'll sure try all of your suggestions; and if I can help you all just holler.Denver [email protected] Friends Make Good Daysairdale60
