CTD without error

Featured Replies

So I have been getting this one for a while, before and after the reinstall of FSX and Windows. Whenever accessing the menus during a flight, usually at high altitude, FSX will just crash to the desktop with no error. FSX just disappears and I am left looking at the desktop thinking "ah sh**! another wasted takeoff and time wasted programming the FMC.

Hi Andrew,

A lot of things can make FSX crash without showing an error. A hardware failure is one. A bad overclocking of your system is another. An 'event' should still show have shown up in you Event Viewer which can provide a clue to the crash. I see you have overclocked your system to 4.8 GHz. I suspect that is the problem. You should review your bios settings based on the information at the following link - http://www.techreaction.net/2011/01/04/3-step-overclocking-guide-%e2%80%93-sandy-bridge-v0-1beta/, especially the section on important voltages when overclocking. I once had my system overclocked to 4.8GHz and for several months. But I occasionally saw crashes relating to system memory. So I reduced my overclock to 4.2GHz and now have moved it up to 4.4GHz since I haven't had a crash since that time. I really did not see much difference in FPS between 4.8 and 4.2 so think this is the course of action you should take.

Best regards,

Jim

Next time I flick it on I will find the crash log, thanks.

Well I have looked all through the event log and have found nothing to do with FSX. As for the overclock I am at 1.355V I think and 4.7GHz at the moment and everything else is stock.

Well, you are narrowing things down. The Event Viewer had to show an "event" occurred. The best place to find the event really, really fast is to click on Custom Views then Administrative Events when you first open the Event Viewer.

Best regards,

Jim
