Hi guys,

I've got my new system up and running now. I'm using a new SATA3 Crucial M4 256 SSD for my Windows partiton. I have another one on order but I couldn't wait to get FSX running so I have installed it to a Raptor that I "borrowed" from a machine at work.

My question: I want to clone the Raptor to the SSD when it arrives. I know SSD drives store data in a different way to platter-based drives, and also that one should not defragment an SSD. Can I simply clone the disk to the SSD or will I have problems? Should I defragement the FSX drive before cloning? (Something I would do in any other cloning situation so perhaps a redundant question)

Is there any specific cloning sofware that anyone would recommend? I currently use Acronis.

Any help greatly appreciated

If it's only about moving FSX data from the Raptor to the SSD, then just do a straight copy. Don't forget to change the drive letters. If Raptor is currently E, then change the Raptor to something else, change SSD to E, to keep the correct references.

Use the partition program Reflect .. its free and better then acronis.

I found using acronis difficult at best; reflect allows you to resize the target partitions and clone.

Soarbywire - Avionics Engineering

Acronis 2012 will keep the alignment. 2010 will not.

No need to defragment - unless you're doing a sector-by-sector approach the cloning process will defragment and reorganise files automatically. The only possible issue is that you need to make sure that the cloning software knows to align to 4K sectors rather than 512 bytes. This isn't SSD-specific as it's a switch HDDs made a few years ago and old versions of cloning software often aren't 4K-aware, resulting in a misaligned partition and poor performance. Just check that the version of Acronis you're using knows about it. The 4K sector size is called Advanced Format.

Cheers,

Mike

Thanks for the answers guys. Turns out the Raptor has a bad sector on it. :Hmmmph: Having to do a full FSX re-install onto the SSD anyway, so question is now moot.
