Upgrade video card or increase oc?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I know this is an age old question but here is my sitch. I am running heavy paywar like NGX with Orbx scenery, REX and 1024 clouds and during flights especially on approach and departure my video card fan sounds like a jet. Also with the Orbx stuff I am getting micro hitches and delayed scenery tile LOD increase at the same time. If I make a recording of GPU-z during these times this is occuring my GPU % is in the 90% area.

I know FSX is mostly CPU but it seems in my case upgrading to a 560ti or something or even a 570 or 580 may make a huge difference. The reason I am reluctant to oc my processor more is that I am allready at 1.375 vcore and temps in prime 95 are touching 72c. I am afraid I may be signifigantly shortening the life of my cpu my ocing it more. Although if it only last another 10 months it may be time to upgrade anyway.

I just think that the scenery drawing like this has to be a video card thing mostly even in FSX because my processor should be able to do better, right?

I am running Affinity Mask=14.

and 8SQ thru NVinspector.

Thanks!

Marc Lynn

As I understand it, any overclock for FSX above 4.2GHz is just a waste. You need to tweak the FSX settings instead. Having high FSX settings will cause all kinds of problems, stuttering, flashing, the blurries. There are a lot of suggestions on the proper FSX settings for any given system. To me it's all in the eye of the beholder. I don't have the highest settings but the graphics look clear and crisp to me most of the time.

Best regards,

Jim

I beg to differ... There are plenty of conclusive results that show OC'ing high greatly improves performance...

I can't find any of the comments I read to support my claim but I have also been looking for "plenty of conclusive results" that show overclocking high greatly improves performance. I think 4.2GHz is extremely fast coupled with the number of cores in a SB CPU. Overclocking higher than 4.2 only brings additional issues to those who are not necessarily computer experts, like voltages and higher temperatures. I did read through the benchmark thread in the CPU/MB forum and didn't see anything that stood out. I do scan a lot of posts here on AVSIM but finding something to support my claim is not possible right now. If I find something I will surely post it here.
