Runways/Taxiways Disappear Around Aircraft

Featured Replies

I have a weird problem at a couple of airports (which happen to be from the same developer, though I'm not sure if that's significant). Often (not every time) I fly into or out of these airfields, the runway and taxiways disappear ahead of and around my aircraft - it's like there is some kind of 'force field' extending a few hundred yards round my aircraft which erases runways and taxiways around me as I move. The underlying grass (and other 3D objects) remain visible.

Anyone seen anything like this before ? Any idea how to fix ? I've looked at the airfields in question using ADE9X and can't spot anything different from other airfields that work fine.

This can happen with wrong layering in the Scenery Library. The airport should be above any landclass or mesh scenery (like UTX/FS Genesis) in the scenery library. I put UTX (all of their areas) down to just above propeller objects in the scenery library.

Best regards,

Jim

All my airports are well above landclass/mesh entries (in my case UTX/XClass/FSG), which are down where you suggest. I suppose it might be worth moving these airfields to the very top of the scenery library though - there may just be some conflict with other scenery.

It's interesting you post this Dick, only lady week I was going to post a similar thread re an airport on Megascenery Earth's Hawaii, I think it's the main airport. I experienced exactly the same problem. As taking off along the runway, the actual surface of the runway simply disappeared and was replaced with the surrounding grass areas. I'm away from my sim at the moment but I'd swear blind it is in the correct position in the library.

Howard,

This may have been fixed with an update. Check out this review, especially the info at the bottom - http://www.flightsim.com/main/review/hawx.htm.

The mesh resolution slider also raises and lowers the surrounding scenery. Make sure it is set as recommended by the developer of the airport.

Thanks Jim - I don't believe there is a mesh resolution slider recommendation for this scenery, but I can certainly experiment with it at different settings to see if it makes any difference.

Cheers Jim, only thing is though, the scenery was only downloaded about a month ago, so I would have expected any update to have been included with the latest version.

Well - I may have fixed this problem, at least at one of the airfields. I tried everything mentioned above without success. Then I stripped my old test FSX system back to basics - everything default and no other scenery/mesh active - and discovered that at this airfield, only parts of the runway and taxiways were visible from the VC/outside view. All buildings etc were visible. And everything, including the 'missing' parts of runways etc was visible on the Top Down view.

It seemed to me that this might be an elevation problem. So using ADE9X (a great program) I raised the airfield 100ft. And bingo - all the runways/taxiways re-appreared, albeit they were now 100ft above the surrounding countryside. So then it was just a matter of finding how much the airfield needed to be elevated so the runways/taxiways were visible without being obviously raised. In fact the sweet spot turned out to be just a couple feet above where it was.

I then loaded the converted airfield back into my live FSX system and flew it a few times. So far no recurrence of the disappearing runways. Fingers crossed !

I am now speculating that this airfield was designed to work with some other specific scenery which lowers the terrain slightly below the default scenery in that area - just enough to cause the anomaly described. Though why it should show in a 500 yard circle around the aircraft I don't know.
