Splurge for 670 from 460?

Featured Replies

Hey guys!

I've been reading around on the topic list searching out 680 reviews and the like, and was wondering if I should upgrade my 460 gtx to the 670? I'd be getting the base 670, and would overclock it myself since I found it pretty easy to do with the 460. I'm running FSX pretty well right now, I almost always have 30 FPS except in the big airports with a lot of UT2 traffic and the like, and hate the little jaggedy lines that I see sometimes which I understand are controlled from the anti-aliasing settings, which is why I decided to look into getting a better video card. I know it's going to be an upgrade and increase my frames and such, but will it allow me to bump up my settings so that I see a lot less shimmer and jaggedies?

Forgot to add:

I'm running an i5 2500k at 4.4 ghz right now, and I'm contemplating getting another heatsink in order to be able to overclock it up to at least 4.7 or 4.8. Also running 8 gigabytes of memory, but only at 1333 mhz, would it be worth the improvement to get faster memory?

A 460 is borderline for FSX with high graphics settings, it's not bad but you can definitely get more performance and better image quality with a newer, faster card.

I upgraded yesterday from the 460 GTX to 670 GTX FTW factory overclocked card and got it to nearly 1200 MHZ GPU clock, and I gotta say, FSX looks better than it ever has before. I can fly in Orbx's KSEA without any stuttering and FPS locked at 30 (pretty much) constantly, when before I would stutter going around the heavy city until I got out to the forest areas in PNW. I have to admit it's only running on a 1680x1050x32 resolution, and I'm sure the performance would decrease slightly going from the lower to a 1920 resolution, but despite that fact, it looks amazing. If anybody is considering this kind of upgrade I would highly suggest it, as it's going to make an awesome difference. I'm going to focus on finishing my tweaking by overclocking my CPU from 4.4 to hopefully 4.6 or 4.7 today and that'll be the end of my tweaking.

I'm going to have to resist buying any other sceneries (which I hadn't been able to do since I wasn't comfortable losing FPS running them) and using up more money than I already have. lol:(
