Finally got my ATI HD 6950 going LOL

Featured Replies

Some time ago, I bought an ATI Radeon HD 6950 graphics card, since I wanted to make use of its DX10 capabilities for FSX, but it was then that I found out that this card is very demanding on power requirements, in fact, it wouldn't even crank up when I initially installed it in my computer, since the PC which I put it in only had a 550 watt PSU in it, which I thought was going to just about manage it, but evidently not.

So I stuck the 6950 back in its box and figured I'd get around to fitting it when I could be bothered to get a PSU with a bit more oomph. Well, this morning I did finally get around to it, and slung an 850 watt PSU in the PC, and sure enough that did the trick, so I'm looking forward to seeing if it is any good with FSX. I've already checked it out with the notoriously picky IL2 Cliffs of Dover, which used to shut down my computer after about three minutes of running time from overtaxing the PSU, whereas it runs happily on the new one with all the graphics on full throttle, which I suspected it would given that like FSX, IL2 CoD is very much processor-bound for much of what it does, although it does use multiple cores. Yet another legacy of commencing development on something when it was thought that single-core processors would continue to get faster.

Anyway, it does seem to run FSX pretty well so far, although I've obviously not spent a great deal of time testing that theory. I guess I'll find out. Kind of odd to use ATI rather than NVidia for FSX I know, since most people do go with NVidia, but I've always found ATI cards did the trick for me, so that's the logic such as it is.

Do you have/use P3d, Al? If so, It'd be interesting, now you have an ATI card, to see if you get the "stutters" that have been making such a stir over on the LM boards...

It seems like (in a totally un-scientific way) it's only NVIDIA owners getting them (or that's how I read it from the thread; LM employees seem to all be using ATI and see no stutters - or maybe they're fibbing  )

Anyway; good luck with the card; I've not had an ATI card since..umm..can't remember it was so long ago..I remember it wasn't very good LOL

Yup, not only do I use P3D, I'm scheduled to do the Avsim review of it (just started writing that in fact).

ooh..can't wait for that review.. :clapping:

Is P3d stutter-free with the ATI card? Was it anyway? I did/still do have them sometimes, but not nearly as bad as some...
