Weather Options, an interesting find...

Featured Replies

I've been using FSMetro for quite some time now and have been very happy with it in FS2k4. I like others have been disappointed in the abrupt changes in weather patterns as weather is updated every 15 minutes during flight. While rediscovering RFP 747 V2 and the new patch they just released, I kept running into FSMetro problems where the server was constantly down at Vatsim. I was given an option to use the 'downloaded weather and stay off line option'. When this would happen in the past I would just bit the bullet and us Flight Simulator's default downloaded weather from Jeppson. My flight was from Toronto to London's Heathrow airport so I thought what the heck I'll try the static downloaded weather. What amazed me was during the flight my sim actually performed better, there were no abrupt changes in the weather either. If I saw a cloud formation in the distance I was sure to be flying through it in short order versus it disappearing when I was within a few miles. Since there was a storm at Heathrow at the time I was amazed that at first I saw it coming, flew into it, down through the clouds, and landed without it disappearing and then reappearing once I was close to the deck. Never saw that in any of my flights before. Usually when weather updated sometimes I lost everything and the skies were clear until the next update.I was never a fan of static weather and loved the dynamic concept but after seeing this I was impressed. I was more impress that weather patterns changed around me and storms built and dissipated as I flew over the Atlantic ocean to London. I guess it makes since that FSMetro took a snapshot of the whole earth

interesting...Personally I could not figure out some of the comments on this forum concerning the 3rd party wx programs. Espcially ones concerning FSMeteo.Since all wx programs only update once every hour and my flights only last about an hour. Remember - accelerated time does not effect the FS9 WX engine (i.e. no forcasting ability). Using 'up dating' online wx makes little sense unless one actually flys non-accelerated in excess of 3 hours. Thus, I have always used the 'download and disconnect' option and have not seen many issues folks have reported. Thanks for the clarification.
