Help With FMC/Flight Plans

Why would those matter > I didn't think you needed them because the aircraft adjusts itself. Why would speed have anything to do with the aircraft using 2 different paths? And anyways, how would you set the speeds? I use vataware then i go to simroutes. What would the SID and STAR be for this route that i was given through those sites: Also, what would the 'transition be, if any?

You also need to be flying on an intercept course to the nearest waypoint of less than (off the top of my head - anyone else please correct) 30deg for LNAV to kick in and start following the magenta line...

SIDS and STARS are not used at all airports, but are very common at busy commercial fields (there are exceptions). Again, a critical part of planning is getting hold of charts for your destination before you even turn the aircraft on.

Re-flying the tutorial a few times will give you a chance to use the same SIDS and STARS, thus getting used to one route first. (especially if you fly them in clear weather mode with no wind so you can nominate the same runway). I have flown the route between London Gatwick and Jersey (Channel Islands) more times than I can remember, and particularly when I joined BA Virtual. The familiarity with the route has helped make programming second nature.

Most importantly at this point, you must accept that the aircraft is trying to respond to your input - be that direct or from the FMC. When you understand what you are doing better and how the aircraft systems work, this will all start to make sense. Take courage - it's worth persevering! I've spent just over a year on the NGX and can finally do all the flight checklists without looking at the checklist about 95% correct each time (I still check it at each stage!!) and conduct a 100% successful flight each time.

You'll get there :)

For planning US flights, I use Flightaware and SkyVector. Gives you updated realworld flight plans and charts.

Alright, nothing will work at all anymore. This is what happened for a flight plan KPHX-KDAL, clearly the aircraft was going for a vector that it would never find, and it wasn't going the correct direction. The actual waypoints were somewhere else. I need help bad guys! Why won't anything work!? Someone pleaseeeee help.

The thing is that it most likely did work! My guess is you filed a SID that ended in a vector from which ATC will bring you to your route. But since you have no ATC and took no actions the aircraft just kept on going, which is precisely what it should do!

Also I am very carefull about removing discontinuties, they are often there for a reason and removing them without looking at the cause can mean that you will deviate significantly from your cleared routing, which offline is not a problem but online (or even worse, RW) it could be very very bad indeed...

And finally I'd recommend vRoute for flight plans, it's free to download (ther is also a payware version) and has tons of routes. It rarely fails me, and I find it to be al ot more accurate than most auto generators (but stay away from the routes in vRoute that are marked as unavailable, they may have fallen out of airac cycle or be old routes that aren't valid anymore).
