GPU Transition Help: ATI > nVidia

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I will be transitioning today to a pair of EVGA GTX 680 4GB FTWs from my 2 Sapphire HD6950 2GB Dirt 3 Editions. Yesterday I made the error of updating my drivers on the ATI cards and it disabled Win7 Aero theme compatibility. This is frustrating in the extreme but at least they didn't light on fire.

So what I need is a good checklist for getting the old ATI stuff cleared out, getting the right nVidia drivers in, and getting these cards happy with FSX.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Dan

Just go and grab the latest drivers from Nvidia's website, and be sure that all traces of the AMD stuff are gone!

Once you do this, follow the 1/2 Vsync guide in this forum to get FSX locked down and smooth!

Would you believe that those AMD drivers totally messed up my Win 7 install? Aero themes is long gone and nothing is bringing it back.

The cards are in, up, and running. Still working on getting my stuff back to normal before I start tweaking.

Hi Dan,

Have a quick look in Device Manager, under display adaptors. ( make sure to select; 'show all devices' )

See if there are any additional displays listed, if so, disable all except the new ones, Sometimes updating ATI stuff can duplicate these entries and stop Aero from working.

Did you do a clean sweep on the AMD drivers?

Yeah. Clean sweep, the program you mentioned in the other thread, is now under a new name. It appears there are still several AMD entries in my registry but the cards, drivers, Precision X are all up and running. If I want to kill those I have to pay. Fair, but no thanks.

I put together the wife's rig last night so I didn't have time to mess with mine. I think tonight I'll wipe out my drive, reinstall Win 7 and everything else I have. Win 7 is on my SSD boot drive so it shouldn't be too painful...

Thanks for sticking with me on this.

Good idea. Getting a fresh install of Windows typically resolves all issues in regard to drivers and hardware interfacing.
