Should I switch my CPU?

Featured Replies

Alright, I just have a quick question for ya'll. I want to change my laptop's processor to try and increase the speed from a max of 2.8 Ghz to maybe a max of 3.2 Ghz with the new processor that I am looking at.

Right now I've got a AMD A8-4500M W/ Radeon HD 7640G Graphics, its base speed is 1.9 Ghz, and it can TB to 2.8 Ghz.

What I want is a AMD A10-4600M W/ Radeon HD 7660G Graphics, its base speed is 2.4 Ghz and it can TB to 3.2 Ghz.

The caches are the same, so that's not a problem. I am not a hardcore gamer. and I want a good value. I am not a computer whiz, but I can put a processor in a PC.

Thanks, flyboy...

As far as I know, it is not possible to switch the CPU on a laptop because they are directly soldered to the board.

Okay, I took a look at the users manual of my PC and it saids you can replace the processor if it is an Intel. Do think the AMD I've got could be replaced anyway.

Hi,

Honestly, I think upgrading the CPU on a laptop is pretty unviable. Can't you switch to a desktop?

Laptops are not really designed for gaming, there biggest enemy is heat. PCs have lots of space to put fans, easily upgradeable, and generally can be overclocked, simply replace the heatsink with a beter one. Laptops, generally cannot be upgraded, the Video cards are not always high performers, cpus in general cannot be changed, though some do allow for that as long as the Bios supports it and it is the same socket, but then you must get rid off the heat.I supposeyou could get one of them laptop coolers that you sit your laptop on and have small fans to blow air around the bottom. not sure if they really help.

Alright, thanks alot guys. It's not that my computer is playing slideshow when I run FS but as always, I want to boost performance. Again thank for the advice.

Well, I don't agree. I switched the CPU on my laptop, and it was a pretty easy thing to do, much like the desktop. And it was very viable for me. €20 brought me up from a single core to a dual core, speed increased multi-fold.
