How to convert FS8/FS9 static aircraft to FSX static aircraft

Featured Replies

Hi there,

today I asked Don Grovestine, designer for several outstanding freeware Canada airport sceneries, how to convert FS8/FS9 static aircraft to full FSX compliant models. He answered as follows:

.... I just realized I do have a solution for the "grey" static aircraft. While those static aircraft are FS9 scenery models derived from FS8/9 aircraft models converted with SAMM, the latest version of SAMM has the capability to convert FS8/9 aircraft to FSX static models.

....All the aircraft models used to generate the FS9 static model are listed at the back of the CYYJ and CYCD User Manuals. You can download SAMM from my website (http://stuff4fs.com ), download the aircraft and generate FSX models yourself to replace the existing ones.

I hope this might help to solve one compatibilty issue.

How about sceneries / buildings converting to fsx sp2 compatible so the buildings etc. stop showing grey.

AMD 7800X3D, 64GB 6000MHz CL30, INNO3D RTX 4080, Windows 11.

I've used several methods in and attempt to convert the "Free" Orbx AI aircraft, but none have worked yet. As soon as the aircraft start up - they turn an opaque light grey. As I've just done a rebuild - I haven't loaded AddonConverterX, so fingers crossed.....

MyTrafficX 5.4b is still waiting!!

AddonConverter WORKS!!! The Free Orbx AI general aviation aircraft are converted! Wow! Was I surprised..

Hi Paul,

Please could you elaborate on how easy or not it was to convert the latest Orbx ai traffic, I see there is a 10 minute addon converter X trial download, I wonder if this gives me enough time to convert and test at an Orbx airfield?...because I am nervous of the impact the conversion may have on frame rates...my system is running great with Orbx products following your guidance on DX10... but today I installed the FTX ai traffic and was immediately confronted with grey ai aircraft....

I need to make my next move with caution as to not "upset the balance" of my DX10 setup...it's the best FSX has ever been!

Is it worth purchasing the converter? or can Orbx (or another) convert the files with it and offer us Orbx customers a DX10 compatible link for the DX10 compatible ai traffic files....

Any help gratefully received & keep up the sterling work and input you have made on the subject.

Kind regards,

Shaun

Hi, Shaun; Welcome to the club!

There is no frame impact caused by the use of the Converter, Shaun, but there is a "wait time" of perhaps an extra 30 seconds in the initial FSX load process as AC runs trough the textures, etc., and creates it's cache file. This is done only once, and then only when it finds another new installation of an older aircraft. It can be invoked from the Addons menu at the top of the FSX window.

The issue I had with the Orbx traffic was that it did have an impact on my frames - much more so than MyTrafficX 5.4 did, and so I removed it, going back the the original static PNW aircraft. Harvey, in particular, is a frame hog, and so needs winding back a tad. I was disappointed, true, but as long as there are aircraft moving - taxying, landing, etc., I'm happy.

The major reason for using it, is that I often fly the Rick Piper Chipmunk and the LSH Maddog, Shaun, and these have to be managed by the AddonConverter, and I see no discernible frame drop during their use. Whereas it

might not work in every situation - for your good, favorite, older aircraft - I think this is the #1 answer, and is well worth the money. :good:

Hope this helps!

Hi Paul,

Many thanks for the feed back, I think I will remove the new Orbx ai Traffic pack for the time being...I presume it is not too difficult to return to the standard Orbx traffic and my Taffic X...

The mention of the Chipmunk brings back fond memories...of flying them as a young man in the Air Training Corps over here before they were replaced by the Bulldog...happy days!

That first link doesn't work, for some reason.....

I'm not sure which would be worse.... the act or the cleaning up.....

If you would like the upgraded Chip - FDE by Bernt Stolle, fully aerobatic, choice of two or three sound packs, works very well in DX9 and will in DX10, with AddonConverter, send me a pm.
