Ripjaws Z RAM and Asus P8Z77-V Ram Timings

Hi,

I just purchased Ripjaws Z RAM... this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231585

I have an Asus P8Z77-V motherboard.

In BIOS, can I leave everything in "Auto" or do I need to manually adjust the RAM Timing, etc?

Thanks,

You'll need to go to your BIOS and set the RAM yourself.

Otherwise it will default to your platform RAM speed (1333 for Sandy Bridge or 1600 for Ivy Bridge)

There are two options. Set everything (frequency, timings & voltage) manually, or use the XMP profile in the BIOS that will set your RAM to the manufacturer's rated speed, timings & RAM voltage.

Problem is that with such fast RAM, and depending on wether you have a Sandy or an Ivy Bridge CPU there, it may not be stable at the XMP profile speed of 2400MHz.

If you have a I5 2500K, I7 2600K or I7 2700K (Sandy Bridge) you'll have to settle for 2133MHz, cause the memory controller in those chips is likely not going to be able to run your RAM at 2400MHz

Hi Bryan,

As Dario said, it will all depend on the CPU and the motherboard that you're running. I have a ASUS Maximus V Gene with a Core i7 3770K and the G.Skill Trident X, same specs as your Ripjaws Z. In your case, the ASUS Z77 motherboard that you have is just fine to run at the 2400MHz speed, and if you have an Ivy Bridge CPU, you should be good to go with that too. Just go into your BIOS and set XMP profiles. This should set everything spot on to get the full potential fromthe RAM as well as slightly increase some frequencies on your CPU, but nothing major.

If you want to overclock, then that will be a different story all together. Personally, I'm only overclocking my CPU, but the combination of a 3770K and 2400MHz G.Skill RAM is very fast.

Good luck!

Regards,
