Although I joined AVSIM some years back I have only been actively perusing the forums seriously for the last few months. I am working my way closer to retirement and am hoping to get more into flight simming. However, I also like playing Rise of Flight and Digital Combat plus games like The Elder Scrolls, Borderlands 2, World of Warcraft, Eve Online etc. I also hope to digitize the family photo collection, going back 40 years, as well as finally getting the various family video files into a more modern format. Thus my machine will not be solely for Flight Sim use but my Games Machine. I think I have finally got my family to consider buying me a GTX 680 for Christmas instead of the usual shirts and tie. They get expensive presents and I get the shirt. I clued into that 2 years ago and now I make sure my daughter knows what I really want.

Now the purpose of all this is that it is time for my new computer. I want to get an Ivy Bridge i7 K series chip and hope to be able to overclock to at least 4.6 Ghz - I don't mind if it uses an air or a sealed water cooler - so that I can run FSX or P3D and X-Plane well. The problem is I haven't the slightest clue about overclocking. I have read various threads. Unfortunately being so new to the topic most of the terminology is like trying to understand a different language.

Can someone suggest a site for a complete noob like me to learn how to overclock - even better with videos? I live in a small town and otherwise have to rely on something like a Dell type computers for best speed. This time I am going to try to build a machine from scratch. Reading what you guys do it seems I should be able to try it myself - I hope!!!

It's much easier these days in that some of the mobo makers give you the tools to do your OC safely. I just built an Asus Z77 / 3770K based system a few months ago and have been very content. YouTube is your friend.

There are plenty of tutorials available on youtube. .The processor you have chosen is excellent for overclocking but equal attention should be paid while selecting a motherboard. A good power-phase design, good vrm and good heatsinks are some of the factors to be kept in mind while selecting a good overclocking motherboard. Don't worry too much about overclocking as it has become really easy with these 2nd and 3rd generation processors.

You should get what you need on youtube. If not then just a quick search over google will get you a decent step to step guide for sure. I am sorry I can't provide you any specific links unless I know which motherboard you are going to get.

Rohit: I have no specific motherboard in mind other than it hopefully will be easily overclocked by the likes of myself. I am fortunate not be on a tight budget as I want this machine to last for several years. I think you generally have to pay for quality.

Best to search on the net for your mobo and CPU and start from there.

On my blog, you'll find couple of tutorials on how to overclock, I suggest you go through them!

It includes both how to's for FSX setting up and hardware part, which also includes a small overclocking tutorials.
