November 17, 201213 yr Hey guys, Figured I'd introduce myself. I've been simming off and on since FS98, but just recently gotten back into it with the purpose of someday possibly getting my PPL. I live in north central Arkansas, and have a couple nice airfields just right down the road! Midway AR airfield (promised land I think is what FSX calls it)....Anyway, last year, I bought the saitek yoke and quadrant and some CH pedals. I'm not interested in ever flying anything over the size of a Baron or the like, so this setup will last me hopefully! I am first looking to upgrade the local scenery in my area in FSX. Then I really want to get my setup and view in the C172 as close to realistic as possible for my budget lol... I currently have 3 19" widescreen displays hooked up to my quad core running FSX. I cant seem to figure out how to get them to link up so I've just been undocking windows and setting them where need be. Anyways, just wanted to say hey! Thanks, Blake in N.C. Arkansas
November 17, 201213 yr Welcome Blake, Great to have you with us. I myself lurked in AVSIM for years before I joined, so welcome to the club. You will find lots of friends here if you are a friend to lots of your fellows. Here we get pretty much whatever we bring into it, and you are off to a good start! If you need any help or ideas where to find what, there are lots of people here that will be glad to answer any questions or lend you a hand. Once again, on behalf of the AVSIM membership and staff, welcome! Kind regards,
November 17, 201213 yr Welcome! Arkansas is gorgeous, even in FSX. I've spent a lot of time flying the ridges near Mena doing ridge soaring in FSX. I've found that the one thing that helps realism the most is TrackIR. The ability to look around the cockpit and out the windows naturally is more important to small aircraft flying than all the advanced scenery in the world... because even default FSX has a lot to look at. I resisted it at first, but I can't imagine going without it now. If your local airport in FSX is a little... primitive, or behind the times, you can use Airport Design Editor to upgrade it. I did with my home field (F00) and it makes a lot of difference. If you fly in and out of your home field a lot, it's worth the effort... and it's freeware. You may find this is really the only custom scenery you need for quite a while. Fly with the weather themes until you get used to it, and try the built-in real world weather for a while to decide what you want in a weather engine. There are a few good choices right now when you're ready. If you want something to do thermals and ridge lift (useful even in a powered plane if you fly over those ridges; you find out what happens), I suggest CumulusX, which doesn't have to be registered for your purposes. If you try sailplanes, definitely register it for some advantages there. Good luck! Hook Larry Hookins Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of EarthAnd danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
