July 29, 200421 yr Ok, I must say I'm pretty impressed with 2004; already I've had several of those "wow" moments. But I've got a cheesy old 32 meg video card... and running USA Roads...I'm having video trouble, I think - after flying for 10 minutes or so there is a noticeable delay in texture redraw - the filtering doesn't seem to be able to keep up with the bitmaps on the ground... Gradually, calling up things like the flight plan window, and eventually any window, gets progressively slower.I'm guessing a 256 meg vid card would help in this case, but I really don't know, and wanted to find out if this performance is symptomatic of a bottleneck at the video card. Thanks,Andrew H e l p k e e p A V S I M f l y i n g
July 29, 200421 yr First its the CPU then the video card. Sounds like the latter is a problem for sure.
July 29, 200421 yr Andrew, you may have 'met' the 'autogen bug.' Solution A: Rename the 'default.xml' under FS9Autogen to something else. Case this doesn't help, solution B: Set the 'Terrain_Use_Vector_Objects' (TUVO) to '0' Solution C: Some have re-edited the 'default.xml' to keep some of the barns and other autogen FYI, this is a bug, which depends a little on where you fly. The 'switch' enables or disables things like those gigantic chicken legs and gas stations etc. The TUVO are radio masts and electricity poles etc. AFAIK. The bug is, simply put, that those objects are being displayed at 'unreal' distance, hence eating up your resources. This is not due to your video adapter. Another problem arises, if the 'Ground Bumps' in the FS9 ForceFeedBack settings are enabled and you have a FFB device. The last problem you'll perhaps enncounter, is when you cross seasonall lines (i.e. flying 'Actual Date'). To me this never happens as I usually fly mid July. This is what everybody refers to as the 'seasonal bug' or 'seasonal CTD.' Hope this helps, cheers and good luck Jaap PS: The winds shifting, is perhaps the last bug to mention. Many an idea about a fix have been suggested. A simple fix, which works fine for me, is the FS9.cfg-line: 'Turbulence_Scalar.' It defaults to 1.000000. Set that to i.e. 0.400000 and your plane will not be ripped to pieces mid-air. Hehe. Glad you're enjoying FS9... Kind regards
July 29, 200421 yr I wouldn't be so sure. He didn't mention (explicitly) a slowdown in FPS, just texture loading. The autogen bug is being caused by the 3D system. It's more likely his 32MB card is getting overwhelmed by the number of unique textures being requested, either from photo imagery, ground textures or a high-end aircraft model.Perhaps he'll post more info on the conditions under which this slowdown happens.
July 29, 200421 yr Author Hi all - Thanks for the tips. Here's where I'm at:FS2k4 and USA Roads.Gradual slowdown of texture, followed by frame rate drop.Strangely, bringing up the FPS readout sometimes seemed to "jumpstart" the framerates?!? I'm getting from 12 to 20 usually. This morning I played around with the display settings a little, and the problem of FPS dropping is seemingly gone; however, I do still see the textures fail to load sometimes. Now if only I could remember what I did....Kidding! I lowered the terrain mesh density from 100 to 75, dropped Hardware Render Lights to 3. Mipmapping remains set at 5.CheersAndrew H e l p k e e p A V S I M f l y i n g
