Couple of FS2004 bugs.

Featured Replies

Hi.I just wanted to mention a couple of annoying bugs that I suffer from with FS2004, just to see if anybody has ever encountered them.Firstly, I have always, (ever since I purchased FS2004 upon its release), had the annoying problem whereby the fs9.cfg won't close properly each time you exit FS2004. I have heard people mention this before saying "oh, just leave it and eventually they will close themselves down". Well, if I used FS2004 perhaps 6 times in one day, when I come shut my computer off late at night, I am presented with 6 fs9.cfg entries in the task manager 'processes' window. I can either shut them down manually from this window, or the alternative is when I shut off the computer, I am presented with the 'fs9.cfg: program not responding' window, and have to choose 'end now', this I have to do for however many entries appear in the processes window. After that the computer will finally shut down. However, things have changed recently. For the last couple of weeks, each time I exit FS2004, the hard drive goes into overdrive, and all processes are a bit slow on desktop, until after about 30 seconds or more, I am presented with the 'Flight Simulator blah blah....encountered a problem and had to close blah blah....' window. However, since this has been happening, I have not had the fs9.cfg entries remaining in the processes window, so at least the program is fully closed.Second problem! This is a rare one, but when it happens it annoys the hell out of me. I have no idea what triggers it, nor how to fix it, aside from exiting and restarting FS2004. VERY occasionally, if I am switching between views fairly rapidly (using the 's' key), all of a sudden I have only got panel and spot views! The tower/flyby, and VC views just disappear! Press the s key repeatedly and the view simply moves panel - spot - panel - spot etc. Because this problem doesn't occur very often I can live with it, but it is annoying nonetheless, particularly in a case such as this morning where I had exectuted a very long and technically perfect startup with the Aeroworx Beach 200, taxied to the runway, and at the hold this problem all of sudden occured! I didn't want to carry on my flight without VC and tower/flyby view, so had to exit. Oh, and I have tried using the menu bar to change views, but if you click on the VC selection from the view menu, you are simply moved to spot view (if in panel view), or vice versa.Anyway, I really just wanted to run these problems by the community, to see if anyone had experienced them? The first problem would no doubt be solved (for a while!) by reinstalling, but frankly I have far to many addon's to be bothered with a complete reinstallation! So I guess I'll have to live with it!All comments welcome!Regards,Al Summers.P.S. POSky A340 being released today! Wooohooo!

Many of these type problems can be corrected with computer maintenance. Try emptying you computer's Temporary Internet files under Internet Explorer's Properties page. Also use the Disk Cleanup feature under My Computer. Use the Help and Support Center to find out how to use these options. You shutdown problem may be associated with other programs that you have running, such as, virus detection programs. You might review what Terminal and Stay Resident (TSR) programs are starting during computer bootup. Many of these programs don't need to be running and use valuable computer resources.Lastly, it may be some addon you installed that is causes the apparent slowdowns and shutdown problem.W. Sieffert

Hello Al,I've never had the first problem that you describe. It sounds pretty ugly though. Also, are you sure it's 'fs9.cfg' that is showing up as a process and not 'fs9.exe'? Anyway, it sounds to me like something is indeed wrong with your installation or something is misconfigured. IT certainly sounds as if the FS9.exe process is not closing out properly. Something is hanging in FS9 every time time you run it and then exit the sim. If you are not going to reinstall then what I would do if I were you for right now is, everytime you close FS9, pull up the Task Manager and 'End Process' on it. You will probably get the 'End Now' window. After you click ok your slowness on the desktop will probably return to normal. Have you tried completely deleting your FS9.cfg file and letting Flight Simulator build a new one from scratch? This would mean losing all your custom FS9 settings, but having Flight Sim build a new FS9.cfg file from scratch might possibly cure some problem for you. Just a thought. As for the second problem, I can't remember for certain but I think I used to have that same thing happen to me a long time ago. Again, I think it turned out that there was a conflict with a keyboard view command assigned to 'Active Camera' to one that I had assigned for FS9. Do you have the Active Camera addon installed? It was so long ago I can't remember exactly which command(s) I changed in my Active Camera's configuration. If you have Active Camera installed you can try and look at your Active Camera settings and change the ones that you believe might be conflicting with FlightSim's own settings. And you could try and send an e-mail to Active Camera's support asking them if they have an idea of what might be wrong. If you do have Active Camera one way to tell if there is a problem is to deactivate Active Camera and fly without it for a while. If the problem is gone and then only happens when you have Active Camera activated then you know you need to change some settings. I could be wrong about all this Active Camera gibberish because I am having trouble remembering, but I do think I used to have this problem and since changing my Active Camera configuration I have never had the problem since. If you do not have Active Camera or determine that there is no chnage after deactivating it, then you might need to just plain wipe everything clean as far as FS9 goes and reinstall to clear your problem(s) up, unless of course someone else can come up with a solution to your problems. Good luck Al!Regards,Jim
