The best fighter sim today?

Featured Replies

Just watched a video shot by someone unknown. But so good! About a crimean war. Made by BIOHAZCENTRAL. Looks like LOMAC. And I was getting this urge to get into a fighter cockpit and do some dog fighting. Now to the question. What is the best combat sim as of today? Is it LO-MAC? I would like to feel the surge of a supersonic turn while trying to aquire a good targeting solution. The more advanced the better! Excellent flight dynamics is a must.In what direction should I look? Thanks,

Modern? Lo-Mac hands down. It's quite complicated though and takes a bit to get an idea of the systems. Don't think you can hop in and start fighting with out a once over of the manual. Even then your doing basic stuff. You need to really get into the manual to get the most enjoyment out of it.For pure dog fighting it's IL-2 Forgotten Battles (and the Aces expansion pack, with the soon to be released Pacific Fighters).IL-2 FB is hands down the best all round combat sim. It has a slew of planes and a slew of maps not to mention amazing flight dynamics. Forget everything you learned in MSFS.Funny, I have been playing IL-2 since it came out (now they have "IL-2 FB"). Never had the urge to try Lo-Mac until I seen it for $10 in the bargin Bin.Nothing compares to IL-2 FB in the dog fighting department, firing a sidewinder at a guy 5 miles away is not my idea of a dogfight. It does not have the same flare as almost sawing a guys rudder off as you spray him with your cannons. But when it comes to bombing I have just as much fun in Lo-Mac as I do in IL-2 FB.If you can only get one get IL-2 FB. I say get both and both have amazing flight dynamics.XP Home SP1Asus P4P800-SE Intel 3.0GHZDDR 400 D/C 2x512MBGeForce FX 5700 256MB (56.72)SB AudigyMSFF2 & X45 throttleSee you in the fence...CYYZ

AlstiffWe might engage on the fence sooner than you think. As I'm living in the CYYZ area as well. Maybe it's a good thing getting all the anger off all the stupid drivers on the 401?I am looking for a modern sim. Used to play the F22 and the Jane's F/A-18. Heard that F16-Falcon (was the first sim I bought) in it's latest version was really good.Cheers, see you in the Toronto skies!

Mats, go to Staples and look in the cheapo bins. They had Lo-Mac there for $10.I'm a prop junkie at heart so IL_2 FB will always be "my sim of choice".But I have to admit Lo-Mac blew me away when I played it. Nothing like launching a Mavrick at a building!Check the official Lo-Mac forums for tips on getting better performance out of the game. It is a system hog but with a few easy tweaks it makes things alot smoother.I live in the beaches BTW. HI MattsIf its graphics that turn you on then i'd recommend Lomac. However if you want to know what its like to fly a fighter in a modern combat environment both air-air and air-ground then currently the only sim which shows this correctly is Falcon 4 with either the Superpack4 or Free falcon3 expansions.Lomac does not show any depth in avionics modelling compared to Falcon and its campaign is not even in the race. Many real F16 drivers use Falcon for mission planning and flying for their own home use and that shows no bigger compliment. With the BMS mods the graphics look quite nice with some excellent Hires 1024x1024 skins.HTHDarren

Darren,I'd rather have a glitch in the kljsdfhsdfkl than a glitch in the flight model. I am looking for a true to life fighter. I tried to apply for a aircraftsmanship... but I was too tall. 193 centimeters. or 6 feet 4 inches. I would like someone to tell me about the Griffon!! Anu swedish aviators on the forum?Cheers,

I would say lomac too.ive hardly spent any time with it. It does have a big learning curve.Im too used to msfs configs and stuff. other sims key commands seem weird to me..

I agree, IL2 FB is really a fantastic sim on almost every level. However, the getting killed rate is pretty high, and a little frustrating. Taking on a group of bombers from the rear is often fatal. It may be realistic, but...Also, from an eye candy perspective, I find the ground scenery generally dull, and the missions in FB and the add on, Operation Barbarossa, a little repetitive. If you want slightly more of a game than a sim, I recommend Combat Flight Simulator 2. The more open architecture means that the community is still active. This is a good site:http://www.netwings.org/There are some fantastic home made campaigns out there. My favourite is "Defence of Australia", which has some beautifiully crafted missions, and a level of immersion that these newer sims have yet to replicate.Don't waste money or time on CFS3. MS dropped the ball there...
