Quantifying FS' options' effects on performance?

Featured Replies

Just wondering if there has been any kind of reasonably scientific test of how, exactly, each of FS' options really affects performance on some type of baseline...For example, it would be good to know that if I wanted to run weather effects on highest settings, then I could reduce (x) and (y) by a certain amount to counteract it and maintain performance.I suppose frame rates is a way to do it, but they're too rounded out to detect subtle differences.Andrew

I'm afraid that there is just too much variance from one system to the next for any sort of definitive baseline analysis. Even the numerous tricks and tips we see presented here will work for some while reducing performance for others. Ideal settings will vary by OS, video card, etc.For myself, I have a test flight (autopilot landing at KSEA using the default C172), and then I use FRAPS to measure the average FPS from the moment the flight starts until the moment the gear hit the runway. This has been a very effective way to gauge the effect of the sliders on my system. I can also test out payware planes, measuring them against each other and against the defaults. It also gives me an objective way to periodically test my FS9 to make sure that it is running smooth. However, as you noted, not even FPS tell the whole story. If I set my resolution high (say 1600x1200), I still get decent FPS but I also get micro-stutters in turns.I do wish that people would at least set up their own baseline tests like I described here before they say "FPS seem to be higher" in response to the latest drivers or add-on or tweak or whatever.

Hi Jimmy - "I do wish that people would at least set up their own baseline tests like I described here before they say "FPS seem to be higher" in response to the latest drivers or add-on or tweak or whatever."It would be interesting if there were a set number of recorded flights we could somehow use as benchmarks.Yeah, that's the thing - I can make adjustments that seems to kill someone else's system, even a high-end system - and it only has a 1 to 2 FPS hit on my faithful old PIII...What's FRAPS? Never heard of it. Going to do a search.Andrew

Hi,As Jimmy said, there are too many variables. But you can get this file from the Avsim library: reality_xp_fs2k4_tweaker.zipIt will tell you some things about what settings take up what kind of resources. It may not be as detailed and scientific as what you are looking for, but it is still good for a quick look over.Jean Luc and the Reality XP team rock! :)Cheers,Jim
