Ski Areas?

Featured Replies

I can tell you that one of the very best VFR checkpoints in the real world is a ski area (summer or winter). Sure would be cool if someone could superimpose a ski trail map in FS so we could see the trails. Landclass doesn't seem to pick up the mass deforestation ;-)David

Hi David,it's been done, though only for a limited number of areas (yet). Search here in the library for "ski area" or "ski hills" and you'll find scenery add-ons by Carlyle Sharpe, Wilfred Husted, Fred Choate, Lon Gordon, and myself (Holger Sandmann). Below are a few screenshots of my projects: Mt Baker, Revelstoke, Lake Louise, and Kicking Horse (Golden).Cheers, HolgerEdit: almost forgot that one can also use the Lyon's skier to run down the slopes - great fun, especially with the cute sound effects (screams and "whoosh") ;-) http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/86883.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/86884.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/86885.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/86886.jpghttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/86887.jpg

Holger,That is very cool stuff! Not sure how I missed it. Since I live and fly in Colorado it would be great to have Vail, Aspen, Telluride, and Steamboat done in the same way. What program would you use for something like this? ThanksDavid

Hi David,Lon Gordon's Aspen ski area includes the Ground2K4 source files, which allows you to see exactly how he's done it (we're all using the same approach, I believe). Ground2K4, by Christian Fumey (in the file library) is a versatile landscape scenery design program that lets you do all sorts of neat stuff. The ski hills are two layers of textured polygons that drape themselves onto the mesh; the lower layer is the grass and then "islands" of treed polygons are placed on top.Cheers, Holger

I've been working on all the Ski areas for Washington, but the project's been on the back burner for a few weeks while I've been doing some major work on coastlines. I've finished Steven's Pass, a more detailed Mt. Baker, and most of Crystal. I'm still going to do Hurricane Ridge, Snoqualmie (that's a tough one) and probably Mission Ridge. I'm skipping Loup Loup, 49 North, Bluewood, and some other tiny local areas, unless there is a huge demand for them. It's amazing how well they lay over the FSgenesis terrain... I know Stevens Pass like the back of my hand (probably have 100 skiing days there) and most all the trails fit the mesh perfectly.Dan

Hi Dan,great to hear you're still working on it. Say, will your Mt. Baker override mine or is it not compatible with us_wa_nc.zip? I'm all for more detail in the ski areas, just checking...Cheers, Holger

Holger,Thanks for the tip! The file really improves Aspen and now I'm inspired to try my hand at it. If no one has done Telluride, I will work on that. Hopefully you guys will be patient with my questions! Thanks againDavid

I have Lon Gordon's Aspen ski area and Carlyle Sharpe's Crested Butte ski area sceneries and they are very good.(The file names are crested_butte_ski_area.zip and aspen_ski_areas.zip)
