$2000 FSX Bulid

Featured Replies

Hi,

-After going over my budget so many times by now,

(Was $800 without sim equipment & accessories and monitor)

I tried to not exceed the overall budget…

But I failed! <_<

- Leaving me with this $2000 build (FSX add-ons not included)

* I will be using this PC for a long time & other projects beside FSX *

** Budget of course will be divided into monthly basis for money purposes obviously! **

- Enough talking and let’s get to it

*** Parts prices are almost identical to which I found them,

but of course it changes over the time ***

**** I will start purchasing the parts necessary for the build starting from next week ****

- I want your opinions on this final build guys?!! (Any tweaks or final changes?)

Thank you..

Looks pretty solid to me but I would make a couple of minor changes, which may bump up cost a little though.

For the GPU get atleast a 660 Ti.

Make sure your RAM is a fast speed like 2400Mhz as Ivy Bridge & FSX loves this.

Also, Have you considered the Samsung 830 for your SSD?

- Thank you for your replay..

I’ve been watching the reviews on the Samsung for quite a time now!

And in almost every review, people said well about them!

- But my concern was not the speed.. (SSD’s are fast enough)

What I cared for is reliability!!

And nobody so far was able to confirm how good they are in the long term..

Because they are new in the market..

I guess I'm happy with M4 regardless of Samsung speed advantages over M4.

- 2400Mhz RAM.. I was trying the other day to see the benchmark on those,

And every time the result seems very close compared to 1600Mhz..

- Do you have and comparison between 1600Mhz and 2400Mhz in regard of FSX performance?

- Why you mentioned that I should at least get 660 Ti?

* I can squeeze that in the budget and save on something else I guess, IF NECESSARY *

\ UPDATE: UPGRADED TO 660 TI WITH ONLY $9.99 DIFFERENCE /

Thank you again

As far as reliability goes from everything I've read the Samsung 830's are considered one of the most reliable SSD's, I based my decision to buy two of them based on their reliability and speed combo.

As for RAM speed it does make a difference. Check it the Fsxmark11 pinned thread here

http://forum.avsim.net/topic/329116-fsxmark11/

In my own experiences going from 1600Mhz to 2133Mhz yielded an avg fps increase of about 3fps.

Other users on ivybridge have reported greater improvements on 2400Mhz. There are a number of posts on RAM speed and ivy bridge including in the thread I linked to above.

The reason I said to go for the 660 Ti is that this yields performance closer to the gtx 670 and 680 for only a minor price premium over the 660 you listed before. See this for example

- Well, I think I’m going with the Samsung then, -_-

But I can see that there is new one in the market, which is the 840..

Which one do you think I should get? 830 or 840?!!

* Both of them are is the same price range *

- & I think I’m going to pass regarding the 2400Mhz,

those 2400Mhz's will do some harm in the budget.. more than just a 3fps loss

- I went ahead and added the 660 Ti...

Thank you..

I'd go for the 830 over the 840. It's the 840 Pro that's actually the successor to the 830 but is fair bit more expensive. There are some differences in the 840 non pro that made it less attractive to me. Touch might need to Google it and read up on it a bit.

As for RAM, just get the fastest speed you can fit into your budget.

I would find some room in your budget to make the faster RAM a reality, you're passing up on a tangible performance benefit at minimal cost. Remember, those 3 fps (or more, as I found to be the case in my own testing with even faster RAM) can be had with zero sacrifice in reliability and for maybe 1% of your build cost. You do the math.
