December 30, 201213 yr As some of you know from reading my posts in the Ivy Pictorial De-Lidding Guide thread, I've been having a devil of a time getting my newbuild computer to post. The problem, after a lot of trial and error, seems to be that the Asus Maximus V Gene has a lot of trouble recognizing memory. You can google "maximus v" and "error code 55" if you doubt this. Where I am now is... I've been able to get the system to post, and even to accept an XMP profile, for GSkill RipjawsZ Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2400 (PC3 19200) (F3-2400C10D-8GZH). The only problem is that I can't get the motherboard to read both modules unless they're both set in Channel 1 (slots A1 and B1). One module will boot in any slot. The second module won't boot at all if it's on its own, and it can only be read if both modules are located in Channel 1. My question is - is this an OK arrangement? Or am I losing performance if I'm not set up in dual channel? Or would I better off getting a single 8-meg DIMM set up in A1 (or A2)? Thanks in advance. The good news is that I've got a somewhat-functioning system, which is more than I had this morning. So I'll take it. But I'd still like to know what needs to be fixed. January 1, 201313 yr You can google "maximus v" and "error code 55" if you doubt this. Hi Alan, Been there done that (but with another board). Man was that a hassle... why in blazes the MC has to be on the cpu... :t0105: Or am I losing performance if I'm not set up in dual channel? The simple answer is yes... The difficult answer is "how much". Here you can see the AIDA difference. How much this affects FSX fps I really have no clue as I never tested btwn the two. If you are like me... you are having quite a bit of heartburn over it. My guess at this point is "not much"... but it is a guess.
January 1, 201313 yr Author Thanks. Part of me says that it won't make that much of a practical difference in FSX. But the other part says that if I'm going to all this trouble to de-lid Ivy CPUs and lap the lids and heatsinks, it doesn't make much sense to live with memory performance that might even theoretically be compromised. So, based on the responses in my "reliable MOBO" thread, I'm going to have a look at Gigabyte, with ASRock a close second. Working dual-channel memory isn't that much to ask, is it? Btw... I think the Hasse (Westman) a big fan of Gigabyte... I am thinking of one too...
