A bunch of new 38.4 m mesh scenery. What's up?

Featured Replies

Today in AVsim File Library a bunch of 38.4 m mesh sceneries, by Vincent van Veen, covering several European countries. All are however only a few Kb in seize. I have downloaded the UK & Ireland mesh (22 Kb for the ZIP file) to discover that the only .bgl file in it is in fact only 732 bytes (yes: BYTES) for the whole of the United Kingdom and Ireland. Is there a new revolutionary technique for creating mesh scenery, which I might have missed?Jozef http://pluizig.ath.cx/signature.jpg

Hello Jozef!I just finished downloading all of them in case they are indeed good files, but I have heavy doubts that these downloads are good. Almost all of Europe in 38.2 terrain mesh for just a couple of bytes sounds really wrong.Maybe they have discovered some new technology that allows good terrain mesh with little bytes! :-)Sincerely,Dennis D. Mullert

Howdy, don't we wish...Sorry but all those files are somehow corrupted ;-( Just tried loading them with LWMViewer of TMFViewer and got an error message. Besides, compiling 90-m source data as a 38-m mesh is not really advisable either, i.e., oversampling! Now, I wonder whether this is a problem with the uploading or did the author not actually check his files with the available utilities or in the sim???Cheers, Holger

Considering Justin chewed up an entire CD to deliver Europe at 76 meters, this would truely be revolutionary.:)-------------------Racartronit means something, but I just can't remember whatifdgsupport.jpg

You guys are just a bit confused. This is the new 38,000 Meter terrain. It's a little boring to fly over but it downloads really fast!David

I agree. My own European offering (3 arcsec srtm data at LOD9, perhaps a bit more area included) comes to a bit over 1GB! http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/87560.gifStevewww.fs-traveler.com

Lol, seriously doubt Holger and the rest are confused :)I was actually expecting the zips to contain only a txt file telling me where to download the 500+ MB's it would be lol :D

It's strange that all those .BGL files, as far as I checked, are all 732 bytes in seize. So I compared by content (binary) UK & Ireland.bgl (732 bytes) with Italy.bgl (732 bytes) and guess what: they are absolutely identical! I don't feel the need to check the other countries.Jozef http://pluizig.ath.cx/signature.jpg

Hello Jozef!I tried your terrain mesh files and they appear to work fine. How in the world were you able to accomplish this without these files taking gigabytes of space? I'm still suspicious, but they appear to work well. Maybe some of the other flight sim gurus can do more in-depth testing.Sincerely,Dennis D. Mullert

Oye Dennis,These files do not contain any mesh information at all. Perhaps you could take another look. This seems to be Vince's first attempt at making mesh and they all seem to have come out very wrong. Perhaps the librarians could remove them before too many more people get them.Best regards.Luis

Que onda Luis??????????Dude! I'm gonna have to go back and look real close because I did a test with and without the files, and they do seem to add more detail to the terrain - might have been a placebo effect. I'll re-check!Sincerely,Dennis D. Mullert

Howdy, there's a similar thread over at simFlight, which was initiated by the author himself. He is aware of the issue and will look into it. I pointed him in the direction of a couple of utilities for mesh checking and I'm sure he will remove (replace) the current set of faulty files. We all make mistakes but it's the intention that counts!Cheers, Holger

That's Great Holger!I'll be on the outlook for his updated files then!Should be interesting as his intentions covered some really nice sceneries/countries.Sincerely,Dennis D. Mullert
