January 14, 201313 yr Hello everyone, As I fly in Europe and Holland mostly, I never had any need for a mesh add-on really, because the landscape is so flat. I do own most of the "must-have" add-ons though: PMDG, GEX, REX, UTX, etc, but as I'm planning to fly around more "mountainy" areas I'm just looking for a good mesh add-on. Because sometimes when you're flying around really steep mountains, it just looks really bad. Sometimes even, the sides of the mountains point directly virtical and all you're looking at is a pile of green and grey stripes. Luckily these are only situated in a few areas like in the Himalaya or other areas with extremely high mountains. So therefore, I was looking for a good add-on that overcomes issues like these and above all makes the mesh (mountains, hills, heights) more accurate and better looking. I've heard about FS Global and FS Genesis. Can anybody recommend me the best one please? Thanks! Arjen Vandervelde

January 14, 201313 yr Author Hi Kevin, I looks like FS Genesis is the way to go. All I want is no or little FPS hit. How is FS Genesis on FPS? Also, I'm wanting to buy the whole world, maybe I'm being stupid but as far as I can see I can only buy seperate countries/areas for a rediculously high price. Is there a way to get the whole world for a cheap price? Thanks. Arjen Vandervelde
January 14, 201313 yr Hi Kevin, I looks like FS Genesis is the way to go. All I want is no or little FPS hit. How is FS Genesis on FPS? FPS hit will mostly depend on the resolution (LOD). The more realistic and detaild the mesh is, the more it will hurt performance. You can't have the cake and eat it too... Simmerhead - Making the virtual skies unsafe since 1987!

I'm of the opinion that mesh does not impose a FPS hit because of where it falls within FSX's rendering process. Higher res mesh may influence the visual clarity, but adding good mesh isn't going to cut someone's FPS measurably. Think of someone with a case of the blurries. Too much is being asked of FSX during the rendering process to where the game cannot draw down to the best texture resolution. Solution? Cut back on some of the higher priority rendered items to give the game enough time to better render ground textures. When is higher res mesh drawn into the game? Same time that the textures get rendered properly. I coined the term "blurry mesh", but it's not something people will see or recognize, as they don't realize it's there. Given a system that can fully render what's being asked of it, including textures and mesh and the FPS will be fine. It could be possible that a system is impacted by higher res mesh when it comes time for texture clarity, as that part of the rendering loop is now doing two tasks, textures and mesh. But again, that's clarity issue and not a FPS issue. Because sometimes when you're flying around really steep mountains, it just looks really bad. Sometimes even, the sides of the mountains point directly virtical and all you're looking at is a pile of green and grey stripes. I know it's a matter of semantics, but this that you describe should be thought of as being "exposed" by higher res mesh and not caused by it. FSX has some decent GIS data (shorelines and the sorts) and it has some pretty poor GIS data. That gets exposed around water, be it lakes or oceans. The land is there and wants to continue, but the water flattens the elevation. This cliff effect can be remedied by better vector based scenery, where the coastlines or lakes or rivers and more accurately displayed.

But again, that's clarity issue and not a FPS issue. You're right, it is more of a clarity issue with FSX not being able to load the detail fast enough, so strictly speaking it has nothing to do with FPS.
