January 16, 201313 yr I am considering purchasing an internal solid state drive. What are the considerations of transferring the operating system from the existing HD to the SSD, and what precautions are necessary. Ron Ron Service .
January 16, 201313 yr Use a cloning utility like Symantec Ghost or Acronis True Image and you'll just be able to copy everything over automatically without having to worry about manually moving files around. This is of course assuming you have a large enough SSD. Check how much space is used up on your current O.S. drive and as long as it's less than what's available on your SSD, do it the way I have recommended.
January 16, 201313 yr There are a lot of advantages to installing everything from scratch, just a few from the top of my head. No risk of transferring malware / virus. Clean installations will perform better. Forces housekeeping - do I really need that? any re-installs via downloads will be the latest versions. If you would prefer to clone your drive many SSDs come with a cloning utility which make the process relatively simple. If for any reason the cloning process isn't 100% successfull this can usually be fixed by running a Windows repair.
January 16, 201313 yr Ron, I used the guide linked below recently to transfer my os drive from hdd to ssd without any trouble at all. I guess I'm assuming you're using Windows 7, if so this should work for you. http://www.ssdfreaks.com/content/664/how-to-clone-hdd-to-ssd-with-windows-7s-own-software Simon
January 17, 201313 yr There's a key factor that often goes overlooked when cloning HDD to SSD. Partition alignment. If you use some 3rd party software to transfer the install, you'll need to check for proper alignment. Some don't support aligment, some are supposed to but may still mess up alignment
