Confusing terminology - ILS in FSNAV4

Featured Replies

I always thought when you say ILS runways, the runways have both localizers and glidescopes. But that is not the case in FSNAV4. I just discovered FSNAV4 also name runways with only localizers ILS too. Is this correct? From the FSNAV map, I have no way to tell if an "ILS" runway has GS. :-roll Michael TanYSCB

If it says "ILS" it means it has both - localizer and GS.If GS is missing then you no longer have ILS - it is then called localizer. This is how it works in real life. Unfortunately I don't have FSNAV so can't help you more.Michael J.http://www.reality-xp.com/community/nr/rsc/rxp-higher.jpg

I have a long time ago noticed this "problem".If a runway.. say 36/18, has ILS on rwy 36, but no ILS or even localizer for rwy 18, FSNAV will show ILS for both runways.

Do you mean FS NAVIGATOR 4.xx?If so, the program distinguishes between ILS, ILS/GS, and back course ILS by the nature of the ILS `arrow`. I think it's covered in the documentation, but it shouldn't take to long to figure out. At the head of the `V` that leadss to the runway you'll find a notch. If the head of the notch points toward the runway, it's an ILS, if it points toward the runway and the end is closed then it has ILS/GS. If the head of the notch points away then its a back course.Hope this helps.Allcott

ALso, if you pause the mouse curser over the runway in question (in the ends of it) a box will appear with all the details of the runway. ILS/BC wichever and also its frequencies. If you are adding an ILS GS to a runway using AFCAD2 or any other kind of airportupdates, I found that you have to start up FS9 once - let it rebuild databse, then shut it down again and run FSNAV's database converter (FSNavDBC - click create database). Then those will show up in FSNav map too on next startup of FS9.

I have a closer look at the symbols and the popup box, they do indicate if an ILS has GS or BC etc.Thaks for the info.Michael TanYSCB

Hi, There's nothing wrong or inaccurate with FSNav. The default information (that is, if you have no addon AFCADS installed) is correct. If you come across runways with Localizer but no glideslope, the you can rest assured that if you got the IAP for that runway its not going to have any glideslope either. Its a BackCourse. If you put in AFCADS, and run the FSNavDBC, it will reflect what you have in the Afcad. 99% of the time, these afcads are also accurate. Therefore its not a "problem" with FSNav. Its how it is in the real world.
