January 18, 201313 yr Hi all, After piling on more UKscenery2000 I thought I'd upgrade my GPU, which was an Asus 560, in the hopes of helping the sliders feeling more comfortable towards the right hand side. A certain online company which shall remain nameless for the moment recommended an EVGA 660 Overclocked. Bad idea!!! A huge mistake! I've never had a blue screen of death before, ever. Screen black outs and program freezes and a total of three blue screen of death to date and numerous CTD's Tried my Asus 550Ti from my old PC and all happy again! Anybody else been in trouble with this before? For an overclocked GPU the fan is pathetically small and at the rear of the casing so, I suspect poor design a major factor. Not good enough for that price. Richard.
January 18, 201313 yr Richard, there's nothing wrong with that card at all, and EVGA is considered to be a highly reputable and respected GPU manufacturer. I suspect you may have just been unlucky. Could have even been that your power supply is not strong enough or something like that. -Anthony Young- "For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been and there you will long to return." - Leonardo da Vinci
January 18, 201313 yr maybe the other components in your pc were not compatible with the new 660: pci slot, powersupply, bios, etc.
January 18, 201313 yr I just got the same card during the holidays, all is fine ATM. Have you checked out the EVGA forums? Easy to get help there. John Hubbard MSFS2020 - Win10
January 19, 201313 yr Author Thanks, PSU is 750W so, surely enough power there. Bios is up to date. I checked the hard drives and memory, no problem there. No problems with system and FSX until I fitted the EVGA so, what can I assume after the initial unit went back to the supplier who agreed there was a fault and the second unit is doing the same? Calling the supplier is practically impossible as there is always between 7 and 10 calls ahead of me no matter what time I ring. E-mail are answered in two working days only! Bit frustrating really. I'll have a try at EVGA support and see what they say. Thanks for your interest. Richard.
January 19, 201313 yr Author OK guys, this is going to hurt but I have a huge confession to make. After your remarks about EVGA I stood back and took yet another look and, after taking a big breath, I fitted my unclockable INtel i5 2400 3.1 that I'd replaced with a i5 3570K and yes, you've guessed it, it's running smooth as silk. Don't ask me why because I haven't instigated an overclock since I fitted it late last year but I can assure you that after the crashes,CTD's, uninstalls and reinstalls I feel battle weary yet content that things are looking better. Once again, thanks for your interest and advice. I'm now off to crawl and remove some of the egg on my face due to recent correspondence with the EVGA supplier. Oh dear! :( Richard.
