Question about Anisotropic filtering NVIDEA inspector settings suggestions

Featured Replies

In agreeing with some of this, because I have run Aniso inside FSX for months on end - there are always situations that can change dependent upon the test: high-detail water will provide a challenge for any GPU's methods used in creating the 16x Aniso, whereas FSX - being a 2003-7 application very likely doesn't have the same abilities as the GPU at all. One GPU to another will make a difference: 2gig memory vs 4gig memory should make a difference: Texture fill rate; memory bandwidth, memory speed - especially driver and current version - all must make a difference. Was this the case two years ago?

If the base application doesn't do AF using the same algorithm to create the effect - and we don't know that - then it's eminently possible that testing with high-detail REX water will produce this result. Quoting Martin's post above - "and a minimal decrease in IQ." (using FSX AF) - and that would seem to bear that out.

If the gpu or it's driver and Inspector - were all 2009 vintage, doing the same test - the outcome might well be completely different.

FSX and it's settings continually change as people like Bojote' or Steve Parsons - and Word Not Allowed - find new changeable parameters in the SDK, or Shader language, or the current hardware technology changes. Six months from now it will be a new ball game.

As references - here's PMDG's Tabs Inspector recommendations, (and you'll note the DX10 comment!.. and here's Nick's recommendations.

Lastly - while I owe no-one an explanation for my earlier post above - this is not a p****** match where it is "open day at a Turkey Shoot": this is a hobby which we all love and share, everyone being entitled on the Avsim forums, to expressing how their own machine and FSX work, what their experiences are, etc., helping each other, and general problem solving: and as long as that discussion stays mutually open, informative and friendly, then everything will be cool.

If there are folks out there who feel strongly about any particular part of this hobby, any setting which is questionable, any statement that might be made, or is ambiguous - feel free to pm that poster and get a clarification, and then move forward. However, creating aggressively worded, accusative and condescending public posts about other people with the express intent of undermining their credibility - especially if it is a continuous occurrence - goes absolutely against the very spirit of these forums and will not be "well received", as no-one like to be put down, and this did happen earlier.

'Nuff said.

If FSX-AF works well with REX, great - if AF set in the GPU works just fine for 80 or 90% of your flying - that's great too. The pleasure you get from your sim is very personal, and no guide or persons recommendation is going to be perfect all the time. We just try to make it as correct as possible to help everyone.

All the Best,

Paul J
