Windows 8 - Not So Sure for FS2004

Featured Replies

I purchased a new rig on Boxing Day and it came with Windows 8.

I wanted to take advantage of 64 bit processing and reduced CTDs.

I was running a rig with duo cores and 4 GB of ram and a 500 MB graphics card. As the addons increased in complexity, my CTDs were fairly common. I was running XP 32 bit.

I spent 3 weeks installing FS9, and all the addons.

I turned off UAC, made FS9 an administrator, and followed Windows 7 FAQs in getting things set up.

After some testing with default aircraft, it was time to return to flying.

To my surprise, the iFly 737 does NOT run under Windows 8. Frustration number 1. This was confirmed on the iFly support forums. I have read that Flight 1 will not support their products on Windows 8. However, I was able to get UT Europe & UT Alaska and Canada to work. On my previous system I had to turn off the 3D lights in Europe but was able to keep them on in my new rig with great results.

Adding scenery has become quite the daunting task. It took me a while to figure out how to get them installed. I finally got FlyTampa's new Dubai installed. But, trying to get any France VFR products installed has been frustrating. All the sceneries show up in Settings -> Scenery, but they do not show up in the sim.

I looked in the scenery config file and FS is not pointing to the right directory. When I go back to the sim, either delete, add or edit, FS is defaulting to Dubai. Does not matter if I update, delete or add, it defaults to Dubai.

So, the fact that iFly is not supported is going to have me grab Windows 7. Just keep this in mind if you are thinking of upgrading.

I fear that if you can't make Fs9 work properly in Windows 8, you will have no more success with Windows 7.

I assume that your assertion that you followed the Windows 7 FAQ was a typing error?

I have Windows 8 and can run Fs9 perfectly well.

I am able to install and uninstall scenery and edit the scenery.cfg file.

I have VFR photoscenery for England and Wales installed, I cannot imagine that France VFR is much different?

As I am sure you know, the scenery.cfg file in Fs9 is to be found in the root folder.

For alterations to be made and have no effect on the sim, I can only suggest that either the file you

or the France VFR installer are editing is not the one being read by Fs9, or your installation is to a location

where Windows 8 is preventing full access to the scenery, cfg file.

I know nothing about I Fly products and cannot advise you, however, just because a developer does not support their product in Windows 8

does not necessarily mean that it cannot be made to work.

There are so many possible ways in which you could have mis-installed that I cannot begin to address them in one post.

Here are one or two,

are you logged on to Windows 8 as an administrator?

did you install Fs9 as an administrator?

is Fs9 installed into either C:\program files or C:\program files (86)?

have you modified Fs9.exe to run as an administrator and/or in compatibility mode for another OS?

did you install any or all of your addons as an administrator?

I can assure you that it is not Windows 8 at fault and that a change to Windows 7 will not address your problems.

Thanks for your response.

I admit, I could have gone wrong somewhere. I am at my office right now and cannot double check anything.

I can attest to the fact that the iFly does not work, I get a CTD when I try to load it. However, on their forums, someone has suggested making a registry change to get around it.

I am 85% certain that I am the administrator on my machine.

Some other sceneries have installed, I can confirm Vancouver +, Jonathan Gabbert's CYVR, Aerosoft's LFPG, LFMN & EDDF and France VFR TNCM as well as FlyTampa's OMDB. The Ultimate Terrain Series has installed. The PSS B777, Wilco Airbus Series 1, 2 & the A380 have installed. The Level D has installed along with repaints and TSS sound sets.

THerefore I am quit certain I have full administator rights. I have allowed FS9.exe and the shortcut to run as administrators. I have allowed full access to all folders and subfolders. When running any installers or changing anything, I am prompted to allow the edit and have to "override" for a lack of a better term to allow for the edit or installation.

I can edit the scenery.cfg file and save it, so I am confident that administrator rights exist.

Everything was installed in the program files (x86) directory. When I look in my scenery.cfg, there are some entries that point in C:\program filels (x86)\microsoft games\flight simulator 9\... and there are other entries that point to \addon scenery and I assume these will have problems and I will have to manully update these in the scenery.cfg.

When you mention if I installed as administrator, I just double clicked the exe file. If you are referring to a right click -> install as administrator (if there is that option) then I did not.

I certainly do not want to reformat my drive, install another OS and then go through this install again, but I am resigned that I might have to blow everything away and start from scratch on Windows 8. It is the least of the two evils.

Thanks for input, if you can think of anything I would appreciate it.

I offer you my solution, not necessarily as the ideal, but as one that is working in Windows 8.

I don't think that there is any need to abandon either Windows 8 or your hard won installation of Fs9 and the addons.

Should you wish to change your OS again or upgrade your PC or for any other reason remove your Fs9 installation, it is worth

remembering that once installed, Fs9 is a standalone programme, ie it can be copied from drive to drive or even from PC to PC

and it will run without the need to re-install.

My installation of Fs9 has been copied from drive to drive several times and remained unchanged through two PC rebuilds.

I keep it in a folder called Fs2004.

Only today, following your post, I have copied the whole thing from an HDD to an SSD.

It works extremely well, as you might expect.

All my addon scenery is within the addon scenery folder, so no changes are required to the scenery.cfg file, as

wherever my Fs2004 folder is, the files are always inside the Fs2004 folder to which the scenery.cfg file points.

In the same way, you can copy or move your Fs9 installation files out of the program files (86) folder into your own Fs2004 folder.

Of course, you can name this new folder to suit yourself.

If you do decide to do this, you can use this tool to amend its registry entry, so that any further self installing addons can find the Fs9.exe file.

Once you have done this, you must then delete the existing Fs9 tile/icon/desktop shortcut and create a new one from the Fs9.exe file inside your new location using the "Pin to Start" option you will see if you right click on the .exe file.

I have set Fs9.exe to run as an administrator and in compatibility mode for Windows Vista (Service Pack2).

Alternatively, there are several posts by SteveW in this topic which, if you can follow them, would let you leave Fs9 where it is.
