Being from the great white north myself, my simming purchases have been curtailed greatly. Like others have mentioned, sales might entice me into purchasing something. However, it becomes also the old allocating game as we. Groceries have shot up quite a bit as well and I have expensive food tastes as well. Beef tenderloin is up quite a bit as is fish. This was supposed to be the year that I was going to buy a new high end system and make the switch to P3D, but that will have to wait until an improvement in the dollar. The dollar has been substantially below par for the majority of my life. I look at anything $0.80 - $.085 as a reasonable exchange. I live in BC so at that exchange, any sim purchases, in my mind would be at par as that essentially negates taxes on those purchases. At that exchange rate, I can drive to Oregon, pick up some go flight stuff and still be ahead of the game, no sales tax in Oregon. But until the dollar goes up, maybe in 3 - 4 years, I'll make do with what I have.
2. If you bought it at Simmarket, you are entitled to a free upgrade for the newer version. I installed vol. 1 sometime ago. It showed up when creating a flight plan and I did not have to do anything special. The only thing was that there was no AI traffic there. I am running MyTraffic and some WOAI. As the airport is fairly new, I think it was opened after FS9 was released. I had to play around with files to redirect traffic from VTBD to VTBS. The only advice is try free upgrade and install that. See if that helps you.
3. EHAM is always suspect at dawn. I've had many of those while on approach. Now, I get some weird brown horizontal texture that starts from the ground at stops somewhere around Mars.
4. With new development quickly drying up, I started to teach myself GMAX and Sketch Up. They both have steep learning curves. My frustration levels rise and I drop it for a few weeks. Unfortunately, we will need to take the bull by the horns and either do our own scenery or offer developers to pay a premium to help them maintain their margins. I think with P3D approaching V3 and V4 on the distant horizon, developers will be allocating their resources to go with the market. My thoughts are once P3D is stable and optimized, that's where everyone will be going.
5. I think this has been covered before, however I cannot find any reference in the forums so please forgive. I know with a payware aircraft, using a FMC/MCDU I can fly into Russia with ease. I can input/ load the route and get to my destination with ease. However, leaving Russia to other points, FS9 prefers a GPS route or a direct to airport route. Can anyone provide insight how to incorporate a FMC/MCDU route out of Russia? Thanks in advance GK
6. Ok, I have read all this... It will not be a cheap endeavour, if it came to fruition or saw the light of day. But... can we, as a community collectively support a new sim to be created using modern engines? I have seen some comments about software development costs, engine costs, aeronautical costs. But, let's not forget, Sub Logic started all of this. Microsoft purchased a license from Sub Logic. Did Sub Logic have all of that? Did Microsoft? All Stephen is trying to do, IMOHP, is see where the interest lies. Eventually, the flight sim community will need to move forward. Not just in terms of we the community in our desired platforms, but in attracting new enthusiasts, new dreamers, new would be pilots. We have, a potential opportunity to have a new sim moving forward with the community's input. Let's just start there and see where it goes. Conversation costs nothing.
7. Loving your journey! I plan on a Lufthansa Cargo journey similar to you. Thanks for the photos.
8. Is that an old Sauber that you are driving? That is one amazing sim. May have to pick that up. WOW is the only word that comes to mind that I can post.
9. Have not heard fat lady sing yet. Corduroy is dead.
10. I try to stay clear of these topics. I, like it was mentioned, tried fsx when it came out. I got better performance in PowerPoint. I use fs9 because it does what I want it to do. Like others, I have a ton of addons. I will switch to PD3 when I see less "help me" posts and more "this runs unfreaking believable" on a system that does not require a preapproved mortgage. Everyone has their sim of choice and I applaud all the work within the community for trying to work with what was handed to them. I would rather jump into a plane and fly than constantly have to tweak, retweak and tweak again. I get it, I am on a sim where 3rd party developers are providing less and less to my sim of choice. It is a good thing because I can start saving for that high end, turbocharged, water cooled, 12 gb over clocked graphics card that I will need to run the next sim. Unfortunately, I have a mortgage, 2 kids, wife, dog, primary residence, vacation home in the mountains, two cars, a career, saving for retirement in one of the most expensive cities in the world. Simming is an escape from all that and I can jump into an airbus or a Boeing and go to some destination that I will probably never get to. And my flight lasts the full duration and no ctd or oom. Use the sim you love, fly vfr, fly ifr, do what you enjoy. All I am saying is that I in use fs9 and probably will for the foreseeable future. But again, my hat's off to you for getting fsx to work for you.
11. I bought 'em all on Sunday!
12. If you are running a 32 bit os, try turning off applications running in the background. There is a utility, cannot remember what it is called but there is one that will help you identify what processes that your os is running in the background. I think it maybe available here at AVSIM. You can also access these using ctrl+alt+delete. There are always programs running in the background that you are not using and these use memory. Shut those down to free up some RAM. If you have any Apple software like iTunes, you can shut that down if you are not using that or iPod services or iTunes helper. Just from my experience. Hope that helps.
13. FAPP ->FAJS->GOOY->KIAD->KORD->CYVR. Longest day of my life. Left Hoedspruit at noon local time arrived Vancouver 4PM local time same day.
14. Hi, I hope I have the right forum section for this and if not, I apologize ahead of time. I will be migrating from FS9 to P3D V2.x in the next few months. I am hoping my hardware is up to the challenge. I have an AMD A8-5500 @ 3.2 GHz, 8 GM of RAM (I think it is DDR3), I have an ASUS Mother Board, not sure which one, Win 7/64. I purchased a GTX 780 4 GB graphics card and I have to get a new power supply to handle the card. Is this good enough to run P3D or do I have to grovel to my wife? Thanks in Advance.
15. I use FS Flight Keeper. I have been happy with the product. The only time I have had problems with the FS9 log book is with the Wilco Airbuses. The sim will crash out instead of ending properly. That is the reason I purchased FSFK.
16. AA was the issue. Thank-you.
17. Hi folks... Using win 7/64, AMD Processor 3.2 ghz, integrated graphics card, 10 gb ram. When I hit the Alt Key and the 'menu' selections appear as expected. When I choose Level D, PMDG or FSCUIP I get a black screen. With FSCUIP, I can hit ESC and it returns to the sim, with the PMDG and Level D, I have to crash out the sim in order to have any response. Anybody experience this? Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
18. I know the iFly 737 does not work on win 8. Not sure about 8.1 though. Just a heads up.
19. Been a good month for FS9. The one that is supposedly dead or old. NYC X due for release this month, Warsaw Chopin next month and I think YSSY not too far out either. I just purchased Shanghai and have to wait until next month before EGLL. I was getting prepared for Prepar3d, but reading some of the issues I thought, what's the rush? I think it will be at least a year before they sort that out. Pretty happy with the life we have been able to squeeze out this work horse.
20. I agree with all your points. I for one am planning to make the jump from FS 9 to P3D. I will also need to make sizable investment in hardware and addons. I feel that 64 bit is inevitable. It might take a few years as you indicated. My problem now is do I jump in at 32 bit, invest in addons, then forced to repurchase those same addons because some developers are charging for essentially the same product for FSX and P3D? Or do I hold off, wait for 64 bit, and just purchase the addons once. Quite a predicament.
21. Hi all,

Have a weird one. My night textures for clouds, runway and plane seemed to have changed.

I have not done anything different to my set up of late, however, during a flight, there was a power outage at my house.

The runway is green, grey and pink. The clouds look like reverse images or ultraviolet images and the plane has a distinct line down the center.

This is only at night, day is fine. Using REX textures.

Too many addons to mention.

AMD A8-5500, 3.20GHz, 8GB of RAM, Win 7-64. Integrated gfx card.

I was wondering if anyone else had a similar problem and if so, how did you fix or any troubleshooting suggestions.

Thanks in advance.
22.

The reason why they refurbished the 67s on the Hawaiian and other leisure routes is due to the majority cashing in their Aeroplan miles to pay for the flights on these routes.

A lot of elites and super elites are on these leisure planes.
23. Great Topic... I have not read all the replies but here are mine: Like many a Canuck I flew Canadian Airlines (DC-10) CP Air (DC-10 with Expo 86 Livery, DC-9) Air Canada (BAe-146, B762, A343, A345, DC-9, DC-8, L1011) And here are a couple that I am surprised that were not mentioned by fellow Canucks: Pacific Western Airlines (Before they bought CP and became Canadi>n) And finally from the East Coast Canadian kid, EPA - Eastern Provincial Airlines, before CP bought them. Awesome topic again. The memories!
24. I'll have to agree with Jim on this one. LM is a defense corporation that is only concerned with maximizing profits for shareholders. I suspect that LM has identified a revenue stream with P3D as perhaps, military hardware sales are off. Let's not forget, the community is their test bed. A few things could happen, they can be satisfied after testing and bugs are sorted out and cut off the community, or they will decide that the ROI is not great enough and close down P3D. Or, they can have this going in perpetuity, and we can all join in on the action. Either way, we are very much grateful for the opportunity to participate, but the community alone cannot prop up this project, and if LM does not get its return on investment then...they will not hesitate to pull the plug and take the write down. I for one hope this is the future, but I would not be surprised if this is not a long term option for the community. I think the future of a common simulator for the community rests with either Aerosoft, ORBX, or even Google. Unless XPlane's UI improves, then they maybe a good contender.
25. I can vouch for both, 744 & Md-11, but if you were to ask me Md-11 is the better choice.
