To partition or not to partition

Featured Replies

Hi,

Firstly I hope I'm posting in the correct forum.

I'm going to be formatting my pc in the next few days and I wondered what everyone's opinions were on the above.

I have a 1TB HDD (not SSD)

I5 4.6 (overclocked)

8gb of ram

If its a performance aid or beneficial in anyway to do so or best to stay all as one?

Thanks mark

Good Q. Probably makes no difference. Say you get a corrupt allocation table in one (for some strange reason) the others are still ok. Depending on the way the data gets allocated across the drive the heads may spend more time travelling and mountings wear quicker or are more prone to failure. But then the drives try to allocate to keep travel down. Hard to say.

I suggest to partition for Win7 plus some head room and a few utilities. Install FSX on the "D" drive. It functions better if not on the same drive as the OS plus if you need to reinstall Windows or do some Windows repairs you wont mess up FSX. Keep in mind if you do a Win7 reinstall you will need Paragon or Acronis to manage the operation. But at least you'll have the option.

More often its FSX that needs to be reinstalled for whatever reason. Either way with one HD its worth doing.

The best option is to keep the 1 TB for FSX and add another small SSD for Win7

Thanks, both really great answers here! Funnily enough it is fsx that is the reason for the format lol, typical.
