August 31, 200421 yr Hi all,Just a note for those who missed the news. It seems that in June the Antilles2004 group released their new version v1.3. This adds airports on Barbados, Grenada, and Tobago. And does some bug squashing and some airport modifications. This is merely a heads-up for those Antilles2004 fans who missed the new release. Go to: http://www.jg-laurent.com/en/For those who missed the package on its inital release, you might take a look. Really splendid scenery. Judgments may vary, but for some (including me) this is the best Antilles scenery available--and its genuine freeware.Enjoy the Caribbean. :-sun1Mike --Mike MacKuen

August 31, 200421 yr Word to the wise though, the first version had a few problems with files being overwritten and other things in general. I just d/l this one to chec it out and planned to install into a temp folder to place it myself like I do all EXE files from non commercial developers, well I did not get an option to do that, not even a notice to what folder it was going to, just an install, I was/am not happy. I am off to see if it did any damage to my FS setup (I hate autoinstallers!!! :-mad )Regards, MichaelKDFWhttp://www.calvirair.com/mcpics/PBTMCa.jpgCalVirAir International VACalVirAir International Best, Michael KDFW
August 31, 200421 yr I had lots of trouble with the first version too. And after uninstalling it at last, I had trouble with the scenery.cfg file which was wrongly modified by the uninstaller. This new version consist again of a single .exe file (installer), so as far as I am concerned: no thank you!Pity though, because I am a real lover of flying in the Caribbean (as Mike M. probably knows :-) ).Jozef http://pluizig.ath.cx/signature.jpg
August 31, 200421 yr Hi Mike and (especially) Jozef,I, too, am concerned about what their installer is doing. At a minimum, they are overwriting the aiports, roads, streams, and shorelines of the default scenery. But I don't know what else.Dick (Rhumbafloppy) reports that there were problems with the earliest release--affecting other sceneries. However, by the time I got to v1.1 and installed it, any leakage into other sceneries seems to have been solved. (With respect to v1.3, I just did some touring through the Caribbean to check. No problems with coastlines and such that others reported last year.)Yes, the installer just clobbers what it wants. Ugh! I don't want to complain--but most scenery artists now allow a "manual" installation for those who wish to control things. But we are recipients of a gift here, so should not complain too much.I wonder if you make backups of your scenery.cfg and so forth...and then just eliminate their version and return to the prior version and add the scenery on your own.Has anyone thought of a systematic way to work around this installer?Best,MikePS. The new installer retains your prior verison of the scenery.cfg in a new file entitled "OldScenery.cfg". So simply revert to that--and add in the new sceneries as your experienced head tells you. --Mike MacKuen
August 31, 200421 yr Hi Mike (MM),Nice to hear from you! After reading your last message I might give it a try. Meanwhile I am flying mostly in Norway (NorAP2004_1.ZIP - Norway Airports add-on for MICROSOFT FS2004 - Package 1) and in Alaska (Holger's scenery of Glacier Bay).Best,Jozef http://pluizig.ath.cx/signature.jpg
August 31, 200421 yr Hi Mike, in respect to what you said, their is NO excuse for ANY install to overwrite a file on your system (unless "they" back it up first), that is just unacceptable, freeware or not.I am a scenery designer, so I can appreciate scenery and also the effort that goes into it. I just finished checking out most of the airports and I'll give them credit, it is a comprehensive package and I am sure a lot of work went in to it. I haven't noticed any problems other than a bunch of textures are missing (maybe I need another install?) and quite a few freeware Macros were used so the performance it a bit low. I also think the designs are a bit basic as well as the textures and the light poles are a bit out of scale, but that is just my preference, you can judge for yourself. I did notice a few dynamic objects so obviously a lot of thought went into it.I was able to uninstall and then make a dummy FS9 folder with the FS9EXE in it as well as a copy of the scenery docs and it installed into this one and I was able to check out the files as a couple of the smaller airports were nicer than the defaults and I would like to have them installed.Regards, MichaelKDFWhttp://www.calvirair.com/mcpics/PBTMCa.jpgCalVirAir International VACalVirAir International Best, Michael KDFW
