Hi,

Just got the J41 and I am really enjoing it! Also I'm studying the manuals and I have some things that I don't understand:

1) In the checklist (Ch4 page 10 and 31 and 32) "battery power only" and "essential bus power established" are mentioned. I guess these parts are for battery starts? I searched the forum a little and read about battery starts and they are essentialy battery on and imediately after that start engine isn't it? So how dso interpret the "battery power only" and "essential bus power established" parts? When are they skipped and when should they be done then?

2) When searching for the battery only start I also found a post about start using GPU, then taxi to ice removal station, shut down here and then do a battery start when finished. To what extend is the aircraft shutdown in this istuation? I guess you do not turn of the battery as the PAX need lights don't they?

3) Abnormal procedures (Ch 5 page 15) ENGINE FAILURE OR IN-FLIGHT SHUTDOWN is mentioned twice,

  1) AUTO PILOT/YAW DAMPER ........................................................................................ DISENGAGE - PF
      (L/R) POWER LEVER {CONFIRM} ................................................................................ FLIGHT IDLE
      (L/R) CONDITION LEVER {CONFIRM} ................................................................. FEATHER SHUTOFF
FUEL AND HYD LP VALVES .............................................................................................. CHECK SHUT

  2) PROP SYNC ................................................................................................................................. OFF
      CONDITION LEVERS ............................................................................................................... FLIGHT
AFFECTED ENGINE POWER LEVER {CONFIRM} .................................................................... RETARD
AFFECTED ENGINE TTL SWITCH {CONFIRM} ......................................................................... OFF

When is which checklist followed? They seem to contradict in Condition lever handling.

Thanks!

Marcel

You would complete the "battery power ony" procedure if you do not have a ground power unit connected/turned on or an engine started. You would complete the "essential bus powered" procedure if you have a GPU connected/turned on or an engine started that is providing electricity.

You would only completely shut down and secure the aircraft at the request of maintenance/station personnel or if the aircraft is going to be on the ground for more than a few hours, such as an overnight stop.  For the above situation, I think that procedure is only followed in cold weather operations where icing may be encountered.

I think the second condition lever item is a typo. Not sure though.

Hi,

Sorry for the late response but I was on a trip.

First thanks for your answer!

I'm still puzzled a little on the startup checklist. I searched the forum and the web but was unable to find the answer.

In the PMDG AOM the items for the battery power only part of the checklist are:

- Condition Feather Shut off/test

- Gear Horn

- Fire Detection Fault

- Standby battery power test

- FMS NDB (expiration)

Why are these only tested for a battery power only start? They seem usefull also for a GPU start.

The same is true for the Essential Bus Power Established part, all the items here are also usefull I guess for a battery only start, so would this part then be done after engine start in this case?

Thanks!

Marcel
