Vista vs 7

Featured Replies

I've got Vista Home 64bit.  I considering upgrading to Windows 7 Pro 64bit.  Has anyone done this, and is there any improvement of FSX's performance?

Hi Chris,

I've posted this before and the general consensus was no significant difference, however there is another possible consideration.  My next machine will be designed primarily to meets the needs of a native 64-bit simulator that is designed to make good use of lots of physical memory and multi-core environments.  It will need to run FSX well too, but that is not my primary agenda.   Right now, XPlane 64 bit does this, whereas FSX absolutely doesn't and never will.  A possible caveat to this is that Prepar3D could be moving towards a re-write to native 64bit, but this I think is still doubtful.  Even so, I'm disinclined to upgrade frequently any more especially for FSX because it is very much limited by its core design and as I say that will not change unless P3D decides to go there.  With XPlane 64bit, the machine will utilize all the ram you can give it, and all the cores you can give it.  Therefore, for me, it will matter as to which OS I use, since different Windows versions support different physical ram limits.  If you have Vista Home Premium then you have a 16Gb limit, which is decent and as mentioned, way more than FSX can utilize.  I'm on Vista Ultimate, so I've got beau coup headroom, and therefore probably won't change my OS for my next build which will be around the end of 2013 when I will aim for at least 6 cores, maybe 10 or 12 depending on how Ivy Bridge E or Haswell E processor with 32Gb of RAM quite likely.  The 4Gb limit is for X86 (32bit).
