EFIS 98: install w/out installed FS 98

Featured Replies

Hi all,I would like to install EFIS 98 for its EFIS Planner (which in my opinion gives the most realistic prints).I have installed FS 2000 hoping that EFIS 98 would install, but it won't. It says it requires FS 98. I don't have an FS 98 CD anymore.Does anyone know what to do about this? I have EFIS 98 SP 2, but of course, that requires EFIS 98 to be installed first.I appreciate any input,Thanks,Sven.

The only way I can think of is to use 2 computers.Put EFIS on the non-FS PC and link the 2 with Pete Dowson's Widefs and FSUIPC. Widefs 'pretends' to be FS98 so that should work.I'm not sure if just installing FSUIPC and putting EFIS on the FS PC would work, might be worth a shot using the older free FSUIPC.I still have my copy of EFIS from when I started simming with FS98, it was, and IMHO still is, a brilliant product just a shame it was published by you-know-who and allegedly 'stuffed' Chris Brett.

I wonder what the install program is looking for? If it's a registry setting, I could fake the registry setting.>I'm not sure if just installing FSUIPC and putting EFIS on the>FS PC would work, might be worth a shot using the older free>FSUIPC.>>I still have my copy of EFIS from when I started simming with>FS98, it was, and IMHO still is, a brilliant product just a>shame it was published by you-know-who and allegedly 'stuffed'>Chris Brett.Agree with you on both accounts...Thanks for the suggestion.Sven.

Hi Sven,"If it's a registry setting, I could fake the registry setting."It probably is - as far as I know, FS98 was version 6.1, so you could try adding a new entry for that version under the 'Microsoft Games/Flight Simulator' heading in your registry (i.e. just copy your current FS entries with the appropriate alterations).Cheers,Gosta.http://www.hifisim.com/images/as2betateam.jpg

Gosta:Thanks for the suggestion. After installing FS 2000, several registry settings were already present under 6.1 as well as 7.0. These values include InstallDir, InstalledTo, and Path. Not sufficient to trick EFIS 98...

Hi all,I am just posting this for anyone's future reference. You can trick EFIS 98 into believing the FS 98 is installed. Using a registry access monitor tool, I found that EFIS 98 finds out what the most recent installed version of FS is (in my case 8.0).Then, it attempts to find a "Path" value under the key of the most recent FS versionHere's the registry path it looks for:HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftMicrosoft GamesFlight Simulator(most recent version)Path, value "path to your FS"So, even installing FS 2000 doesn't help, because 8.0 (FS 2002) or 9.0 (FS 2004) will always be the most recent version. The problem is that 8.0 (and 9.0 I guess) no longer define a Path value under their reg key (they now define a value called "EXE Path"). Using regedt32, you may add a string value "Path" and point it to your FS folder. I pointed mine to my FS 2000 folder, just to ensure that it wouldn't make unwanted changes to my FS 2002 config.WARNING: This post is provided as is, and confers no rights or warranties whatsoever. The author is not responsible for damage to your configuration by installing EFIS 98 in this unsupported way. Always make a backup of the registry before making changes.HTH,Sven.
