June 13, 201312 yr I was pleased when I saw a tutorial on how to install the FS9 VF Farnborough, EGLF, into FSX (no air show). The post is here, but I think you need to be able to log in to the site to be able to read it: http://www.visualflight.co.uk/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=9228 In essence, these are the files that are needed (the others discarded): The problem is the elevation. The recommendation is this: There is one last annoyance, FSX mesh is of much greater resolution and the supplied flatten (VF_EGLF_A16_Flatten.bgl) needs some tweaking particularly to the South side of the runway. I would therefore recommend you d/l Tony Meredith's EGLF from www.arm-computers.co.uk for a temporary solution to this problem. Tony is happy for this file to be used in this way. Check out his extensive work, it is excellent freeware. But whatever I do and no matter which flatten I use (tried creating my own too), there is a difference in elevation between the runway and the airport. I used ADEx9 to create a stub bgl to change the default airport to the VF airport elevation (but no joy there: same result in FSX, even if I put the stub at the top of the scenery library priority). I used AFCAD to change the elevation of the VF EGLF airport and runways. Again, didn't help. If I delete APX47130.bgl the elevation is OK, but as I pan around an aircraft it 'skates' across the surface, moving position in relation to the ground markings. Has anyone managed to get this airport to work in FSX? Well, the posters at the visual flight forums clearly did, but that is now defunct (I just discovered. What happened to Visual Flight?). July 1, 201312 yr I don't have the scenery, but one thing in your OP is off. You do not take an elevation change file and put it at the top of the scenery library. For an elevation change file to catch and hold, it must be read before FSX starts to read the numbered folders and the files inside them. Many times it's advised to place an elevation change file into the \Scenery\World\scenery folder and while that works OK, who remembers what files they have in that folder? I tend to recommend making a new folder structure, copying the elevation change file there and adding that folder into the Scenery Library, positioned down at the bottom (3rd from the bottom). Any change in elevation should also have a revised airport background, which reflects the elevation of the airport. Whether FSX honors FS9 flattens, I can't recall. But I would not attempt to change FSX terrain using FS9 generated files.
July 2, 201312 yr Visual Flight no longer a commercial entity. The community, however, meet on Sundays for online flying get togethers. Thanks to Jonn Farrie kindly allowing members access. Point of interest, John was the original creator of VFR Photographic Scenery for England and Wales. Way, way, back around the turn of the century. Arnie....if it ain't broke, don't fix it...
July 4, 201312 yr Author Meshman, Thanks: the screenshot is from the original forum post however, not of my setup. Mine is pretty much as you suggest in your reply. This must be possible, because the VF forum has a number of satisfied customers, who have got the FS9 EGLF to work in FSX. Maybe I should start over and see if I have better luck. July 18, 201312 yr Author OK, I think I have this working. In case anyone else is interested (Farnborough is my local airfield, just down the road, so I really wanted to get this sorted), here is what I did.Firstly, these are the files you should copy to the FSX/EGLF/scenery folder:There is one file though that causes elevation problems in FSX, the file called "VF_EGLF_RunwayLightingX.bgl" (or just called "VF_EGLF_RunwayLighting.bgl"). You can either remove it, or, so as to keep the lighting effects in FSX, I have edited it using scasm so that it is at the correct elevation. Anyone who can use scasm to decompile and recompile the FS9 bgl file will find this easy (the elevation (Alt) should be reset to a value of 72.54; that's all that needs to be done).I can't upload the file here for copyright reasons, but if anyone really wants this file I could perhaps upload it to an external fileshare site. I guess that's within the rules here at AVSIM??If anyone still sees elevation (or other) problems at EGLF, please let me know and I'll see if I can fix them.Martin Martin Stebbing, EGLF (UK)
