Circuit Training

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

I'm planning to do a few circuits for training purposes on IVAO and I am unsure about a couple of points. If anybody cares to answer it'd be much appreciated!

1. Do I require to file a flight plan?

2. If so, what do I need to put in the flight plan itself?

3. What is the radio terminology and the communications required?

4. Are there any other restrictions apart from those specified on the airport briefing notes?

Thank you in advance!

No flight plan required - at least it's not in RW, so online ATC really shouldn't require it... Radio calls are going to something along the lines of:

XYZ request taxi for circuits, in receipt of XXX (ATIS)

XYZ taxi hold point runway N

At hold point:

XYZ is ready

XYZ cleared for take off

(You should know the circuit direction - tower may tell you to circuit the other way for traffic reasons from time to time however)

Cleared for take off XYZ

Turning downwind (certainly by mid downwind):

XYZ downwind, touch & go

XYZ cleared touch and go (or continue approach, number 7 or whatever, depending on traffic)

Cleared touch and go XYZ

When you've had enough of going around in circles, the downwind call is:

XYZ downwind, full stop

XYZ cleared to land

Cleared to land, XYZ

Or something like that.
