FSX Re-Install

Featured Replies

Hi

I currently run FSX in the default windows location /Program File(x86) folder. Over the years I have accumulated a lot of aircraft and scenery addon software most of which was downloaded and some on CD-DVD. In addition I have various FSX utilities installed like OPUS/FS Build/REX/UT2. I want to now re-install FSX into its own dedicated SSD drive. Seems simple enough but somehow I cant help to feel this will be an overwhelming task especially getting all my addons re-installed to work with FSX in its new location. Do all the addons have to be installed on the SSD too? Can anyone suggest a suitable SSD? Do I have to uninstall via Control Panel all the addons and then uninstall FSX before re-installing? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

I think the best method of uninstalling/reinstalling FSX is in the following guide - http://support.precisionmanuals.com/KB/a87/how-to-uninstall-and-reinstall-fsx.aspx.  I just recently reinstalled everything and I kept FSX in the default drive.  There's a program called TakeOwnership that will get rid of any problems with FSX in the default folder.  If you right click the fsx folder and make sure it is properly shared, then that will help too (instead of running takeownership).  You will have to reinstall any scenery that requires a license to run like FS Dreamteam, Obrx, REX, and UT2 stuff.  I didn't have to for my MSE V2 scenery or MegaSceneryX SoCal.  I just showed where those folders were located and so far all is well (that saved days or reinstallation).

Best regards,

Jim

Hi Jim.  Thanks for the link. Regarding the re-install, should I decide to install FSX into its own dedicated SSD (say D:\FSX) what will happen with the Fsx.cfg file?  Will FSX always write the fsx.cfg to the default application data folder (C:\Documents and settings\Name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX)?  In other words does the fsx.cfg file need to be in the same drive as FSX (C:\FSX)?

Yes, it will stay in the same User folder even if you place FSX on C:\FSX or D:\FSX.  The location of the fsx.cfg and scenery.cfg are not affected.

Best regards,

Jim
