July 1, 201312 yr Hi guys I'm getting started overclocking my i7 920 on my ASUS Rampage II Extreme MB. Now it's at stock freq. of 2,67GHz. Entering the BIOS setting I found: CPU LEvel Up with two choice: 1) i7-940-2.9G 2) i7-965-3.2G in your opinion those two preset is for a safe overclock made directly from ASUS for a stable overclock and with safe settings parameters (I mean Vcore, CPU PLL voltage etc etc)? I found that 2) profile is quite sufficient for my flights. So do you think I can stand with it? My medium T°C for 4 core (with Hyper Threading OFF) is 67°C during FSX session. Any idea is appreciated. Many thanks in advance Riccardo OS: Windows 10-64 bit, CPU: i7-7700K @4.20 GHz, GPU: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1080 G1 8GB GDDR5, RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR4 32GB 3000MHz, MB: MSI Z270
July 1, 201312 yr To be honest that's a small overclock, my 920 used to run at 4Ghz, in a very stable fashion. 67 degrees is a safe temperature. What kind of cooler do you have? I run in the 50's with a 3770K at 4.5 GHz. That's with a Noctua NH-D14. Sounds to me like you could benefit from a better cooler. Then you would be able to overclock higher. What voltage does that Asus "level up" give you? Don't forget that an overclock profile like that does not take into consideration your CPU's unique capabilities, it sets a relatively high voltage so that all CPU's will be stable. You would be much better getting a top of the range cooler, and learning to overlook yourself. If you do that, then depending on your CPU's unique qualities, you should be able to overclock to a level that will provide substantial benefits in FSX.
July 1, 201312 yr Author Hi Martin, and thanks firts of all fro your reply.Hi tried 3.2 CPU Level Up just to try a "stock" and maybe "safe" overclock, but I've already done a profile with 3.8GHz and seems to be stable. Those are my temps:1) 3.2 "stock" overclock with CPU Level UP: about 65-67°T with Vcore of 1.312) 3.8GHz overclock with manual about 63°T with Vcore=1.23My doubt is the DRAM FREQ and DRAM TIMING CONTROL.This is my RAM Corair 6GB XMS DDR 3 1600MHz, directly from CPUID at stock frequency of 2.67GHz:http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/2236/ebuf.jpgSuppose I want to stay with 3.8 which value I have to chose from here in the BIOS?:http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/6529/loep.jpgAgain, Dram Timing Control, is correct to put those values in the "AUTO" column? 9 then 9 then 9 then 24 and so on for 1st 2nd and 3rd information? see the screen and follow the lines:http://img842.imageshack.us/img842/3672/mq0l.jpgMany thanks for your help and patience. I'll gladly send you my overclock settings if you like, for reference, for my i7 920 system. What cooler do you have?
July 2, 201312 yr Author Yes, send me your settings, would be very appreciated. My cooler is a Thermaltake, now I don't remember the exact model, but I bought it less then one year ago for overclock my cpu. Do you want to send me a private message? Riccardo OS: Windows 10-64 bit, CPU: i7-7700K @4.20 GHz, GPU: Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1080 G1 8GB GDDR5, RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR4 32GB 3000MHz, MB: MSI Z270
July 2, 201312 yr PM sent. But do understand, the settings are for reference. I am not encouraging you to copy them blindly. It's for you to decide if they are suitable for your rig. I use an NH-D14, you can't get a cooler much better. Your cooler won't be as efficient, thus temps will be higher. So be careful, nudge up slowly. If you find out the exact model of your cooler, I'll be able to give you an idea as to how much hotter it should be than mine.
