The transition to multicellular life is regarded as momentous. Some experts suspect that the vast majority of life out there is just single celled goo. In the history of our galaxy there may have been a number of technological species, but whether any of them are around at the same time as us is the question. There are some researchers, however, that suspect the transition might not have been as momentous and rare as we believe. Basically, we have no idea but it isn't out of the question that, currently, now, at this precise moment, we are alone. We can't rule it out.

In terms of the entire universe, which may be infinite, and given that atoms can only arange themselves in a limited number of ways so must repeat, I agree. In which case there could be identical planets out there exactly like ours, including identical copies of all of us. The above is minbogling so I prefer to limit my thinking to just our galaxy. And given that our experience of technological life suggests it takes a massive 1/3 of the age of the universe to arise, and given that our galaxy is about 13.6 billion years old, we could indeed be the only technological species present at this time in our galaxy. It could also be that technological life gets wiped out by some great filter before it gets to populate the galaxy or send probes here. But again, we have no idea, we only have a sample size of one, us, our technological species. If we had a larger sample size we may draw a completely different conclusion.

I suspect there would be lots of organisms given that simple life appeared on Earth as soon as it cooled. However, complex life took a third of the age of the universe. So perhaps simple life is common but technological life very hard. The other question, if other technological life exists in our universe, how would they get here across immerse distances. Maybe some kind of Alcubierre drive is possible and can be practical. We just don't know.
