August 5, 201312 yr I just OC'd my box recently and Saturday I was testing it out. I know I did a no no and used stock cooler, but I had another 120 mm fan sitting on top to help push more air. It was only doing 83C with FSX running. The room temperature was 78 to 79F. I put a box fan (24") in front of it to help. Yesterday, I started getting BSOD with page fault in non paged area along with something like 0xc 000050 after doing this tweak http://www.orbxsystems.com/forum/topic/58637-improving-fsx-via-windows. It occurs during load of FSX where it gets to about 50% or 270 meg RAM in use. I ran the msched and it came back with no errors. I'm thinking tonight I will try more options and or memtest86 on a USB key. It's three 2 gig pieces, so maybe I can remove one at a time to test as well? 10700k / Gigabyte 3060
August 5, 201312 yr Probably the first thing I would do is to go into the BIOS and set everything (EVERYTHING!) back to default. Then go and see if FSX would load. Probably with a default FSX.cfg file also, for debugging purposes.
August 5, 201312 yr Author Interesting I was able to go back to defaults in BIOS and FSX seems ok. 10700k / Gigabyte 3060
August 6, 201312 yr Some setting, some where that made FSX mad! I tend to very very cautious on my tweaking, as I spend more time working with FSX than flying in FSX, so system stability is important to me. Some tweaks *might* be able to get a little better performance, but as you proceed I would suggest keeping a diary of what you tweaked and why you tweaked it. If it holds OK, then that becomes part of the baseline to build from. Many of the newer mobos have the ability to save certain tweaked versions of the BIOS for fall back purposes. FSX also allows for saving and loading tweaked versions of the FSX.cfg file, so getting familiar with that can help save you from those nasty crashes.
August 6, 201312 yr Author I went to defaults and ran memtest86. It seems to have passed ok. I then ran FSX with default bios settings and it ran ok. I proceeded to OC again starting at lowest level (I had saved my initial OC settings), so it was a simple reload. FSX ran fine at 3.7 ghz. That's all I could get done last night. 10700k / Gigabyte 3060
August 6, 201312 yr Yesterday I briefly went and looked at the thread you linked. Going by old man's memory, when it mentioned something like set your swap file to 250gb (25gb?) is when I closed the window. Too many people chasing too many tweaks, seeking out to find the magical FPS gold ring. It can be fun, until things get messed up and you need to go back to square one and start over.
August 9, 201312 yr You probably overclocked to much I overclocked to 4.8 ghz i7 3770k and fsx ran for bout 10 min then got the bsod So I went down to 4.6 and it runs well Never run without a good cooler it's the quickest way to fry your CPU I learnt the hard way and never again
