Could FSX overheat my computer?

Featured Replies

I use an Apple iMac 27 inch in Bootcamp mode to fly with FSX.

Lately I've noticed that the back of the monitor/computer becomes pretty hot and I consequently shut down until it's cooled.

We're currently in summer here in Spain and the cause may of course be as simple as that.

However I don't seem to get the overheating problem until moving to Bootcamp and flying my 737.

Comments would be welcome.

Any processor or graphic intense program can cause your computer to overheat. I use Apples alot and they tend to get very hot - especially the Macbook Pros and the iMacs due to the almunium casing not giving adequate cooling under heavy loads. This issue is fine in most countries but in hot humid environments (like Spain in the summer or Singapore where I live) then they do get very hot.

It is definitely something to keep an eye on. The mac dashboard has an app which can monitor all the temps on your system. Just have a look at that and if its hotter than 80-90 degrees on the CPU/GPU then shut it down to cool. Anything under that will be fine.

You are probably only experiencing this problem now as FSX tends to run the processor maxed out - which generates alot of heat.

Thanks for your prompt response RiceySpicey.

One further question though. I've found several sites offering Dashboard widgets that monitor the computer temperature but when I try to download I'm not able to access those downloads. I receive messages to the effect that the sites are not available.

Please may I have the link to download the widget you use?

Mine was already pre-installed on my Mac - go to dashboard and click on the + icon. There should be a performance monitor in there - it looks like speedometer. If it isnt in yours then you could try this link from Apple - http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/istatpro.html
